OTTAWA, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal party won three special elections \u200con Tuesday, maintaining Carney’s slim majority in Parliament at \u200ca time when he has called for national unity to face a \u200bworsening trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Liberal candidates won seats in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec after Carney’s government first secured a majority in April.<\/p>\n
The seats in British Columbia and \u200cOntario were Liberal \u2060strongholds, but in the French-speaking province of Quebec it was a tightly fought contest in a \u2060riding previously held by the Conservatives, making it the most significant win for Carney. Quebec voters will vote on October 5 \u200bin \u200ban election the separatists are \u200bfavoured to win, despite falling \u200csupport for independence.<\/p>\n
“At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government’s plan,” Carney said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“Canada is being tested in a changing world,” he said. “We are building our strength at home and diversifying \u200cour trading relationships abroad.”<\/p>\n
Carney broke off \u200btrade talks with the Trump administration \u200blast month, saying Canada \u200bhad been “attacked” and that American officials did \u200cnot respect the country’s sovereignty. Trump \u200bissued an \u200bexecutive order last week changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America and called again for Canada to \u200bbecome the 51st \u200cstate.<\/p>\n
Another six special elections in Canada will be \u200bheld in coming months to fill remaining vacancies.<\/p>\n
