{"id":191255,"date":"2026-09-01T16:51:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T16:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/191255\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T16:51:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T16:51:23","slug":"carneys-liberals-win-3-special-elections-to-keep-majority-as-canada-confronts-trump-threats-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/191255\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney&#8217;s Liberals win 3 special elections to keep majority as Canada confronts Trump threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By Maria Cheng<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">OTTAWA, Sept 1 (Reuters) &#8211; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney&#8217;s Liberal party won three special elections \u200con Tuesday, maintaining Carney&#8217;s slim majority in Parliament at \u200ca time when he has called for national unity to face a \u200bworsening trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Liberal candidates won seats in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec after Carney&#8217;s government first secured a majority in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The seats in British Columbia and \u200cOntario were Liberal \u2060strongholds, but in the French-speaking province of Quebec it was a tightly fought contest in a \u2060riding previously held by the Conservatives, making it the most significant win for Carney. Quebec voters will vote on October 5 \u200bin \u200ban election the separatists are \u200bfavoured to win, despite falling \u200csupport for independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government&#8217;s plan,&#8221; Carney said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Canada is being tested in a changing world,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are building our strength at home and diversifying \u200cour trading relationships abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney broke off \u200btrade talks with the Trump administration \u200blast month, saying Canada \u200bhad been &#8220;attacked&#8221; and that American officials did \u200cnot respect the country&#8217;s sovereignty.
