As US President Donald Trump ordered Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” amid collapsing trade negotiations with Canada, social media users spread the claim that ships traveling through the body of water via the Canadian Welland Canal were not allowed to pass if they had documentation bearing the new name. This is false; the seaway corporation which controls operations through the canal said traffic was continuing as usual.<\/p>\n

“FOX News: Dozens of ships bound for ‘Lake America’ have piled up at the entrance to the Welland Canal,” claims an August 29, 2026 Facebook post<\/a>. “Canada is refusing to grant them permission to proceed. Ships that list ‘Lake Ontario’ in their documents are passing through the canal without obstruction.”<\/p>\n

The attached image shows a map of the waterway<\/a> cutting through the Niagara Peninsula in Canada to connect Lake Erie and Lake Ontario (archived\u00a0 here<\/a>), which Trump recently\u00a0 required<\/a> US agencies refer to as “Lake America.”<\/p>\n

Different posts across Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, Threads<\/a>, TikTok<\/a> and\u00a0 X<\/a> made the same claim about traffic through the Welland Canal being filtered based on which name ships used for the lake. The supposed report was frequently attributed to American broadcaster Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The posts appeared around a week after trade talks with Canada broke down<\/a>\u00a0and precipitated Trump’s push to rename one of the Great Lakes straddling the US-Canada border.<\/p>\n

Following the August 27\u00a0 executive order<\/a> proclaiming the body of water as “Lake America,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out<\/a> Lake Ontario’s name was derived<\/a> from an Indigenous word<\/a>, used long before the founding of the United States and the confederation of Canada (archived here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a> and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The nomenclature spat already prompted false claims debunked<\/a> by AFP. The posts claiming Trump’s renaming of the lake caused a backup at the Welland Canal are similarly untrue.<\/p>\n

A Fox News spokeswoman confirmed to AFP in an August 31 email that the broadcaster did not publish a story about a supposed pileup at the shipping lane. Keyword searches<\/a> do not turn up any legitimate reporting on a traffic jam of ships transiting through the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the St Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation<\/a>, which controls traffic through the\u00a0 Welland Canal<\/a>, said the executive order had not impacted the waterway’s operations (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

” Seaway operations are continuing normally and have done so throughout this past weekend,” a spokeswoman said in a September 1 email to AFP. “Vessels are transiting the Welland Canal as usual.”<\/p>\n
