Sen. Jeanne Shaheen<\/a> (D-N.H.) checked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick<\/a> on Wednesday for complaining about how Canada<\/a> has treated the U.S. since President Donald Trump<\/a> launched his trade war with the country last year.<\/p>\n

Shaheen \u2014 in remarks to Lutnick during his testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee \u2014 pointed to a roughly 30% drop<\/a> in Canadian tourists visiting her state last year before arguing that the figure is due to \u201cthe loss of trust and goodwill\u201d because of the administration\u2019s rhetoric.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does insulting our closest ally and neighbor help the businesses in my state of New Hampshire and states all across this country that are hurting because of the loss of Canadian business and tourism?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

As Lutnick began to discuss how Canada \u201cleans on\u201d the U.S. economy, Shaheen cut him off to underscore that businesses on both sides of the northern border have taken hits due to comments from Trump officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does that help our economy?\u201d she asked of Lutnick, who recently summed up Canada\u2019s trade strategy by saying, \u201cThey suck<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is outrageous that Canada will not put U.S. spirits on the shelf. It is insulting and disrespectful to America that they won\u2019t even put\u2014\u201d Lutnick began.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d said the senator, who noted that her husband has an interest in a company that has American spirits. \u201c[Canada] won\u2019t do it because of the insults from this president and comments like yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaheen\u2019s exchange with Lutnick arrives months before the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (or USMCA) is up for review in July.<\/p>\n

Lutnick has said that the president thinks USMCA is a \u201cbad deal\u201d that \u201cneeds to be reconsidered and reimagined correctly.\u201d (Note: Trump wondered \u201cwho would ever sign<\/a>\u201d such a deal last year despite doing just that in 2020 when he called it the \u201cbest agreement we\u2019ve ever made.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The senator, in an interview<\/a> with CNN<\/a>\u2019s Jake Tapper later Wednesday, emphasized that Trump officials aren\u2019t helping by criticizing Canada, adding that the country is going to China for business deals instead of its neighbor.<\/p>\n
