Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told the Trump administration Tuesday to \u201cstop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough,\u201d as he pushed back against a fresh wave of attacks<\/a> from Washington. Carney said U.S.-Canada trade talks could<\/a> resume if Washington became serious about negotiations.<\/p>\n

Oil giant Chevron confirmed that it will expand its operations in Venezuela, just days after President Donald Trump announced an ambitious deal<\/a> to develop the nation\u2019s oil reserves<\/a> and give the Pentagon a stake in the profits.<\/p>\n

Americans\u2019 belief that there is widespread corruption in the U.S. government has reached a record high, according to a new Gallup poll<\/a> released Wednesday. About 9 in 10 Americans \u2013 89% \u2013 say corruption is widespread throughout the U.S. government. That\u2019s up 10 percentage points from last year, and marks the highest measure recorded in Gallup\u2019s 20-year trend.<\/p>\n

Mark Carney says the deal Trump sought would wipe out Canadian industries<\/p>\n

Carney said during a fresh barrage of taunts from Trump administration officials that the U.S. approach in the talks would have left Canadian industries effectively as subsidiaries of American companies or imposed terms under which they would be \u201cgradually wound down in Canada and wiped out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carney said Washington also sought limits on Canada\u2019s future trade deals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to \u2014 of course, we\u2019re not going to accept those terms,\u201d Carney said. \u201cCanada is a sovereign state. We will strike free trade deals with the countries we wish to strike free trade deals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bea Bruske, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, said Carney told labor leaders they could not expect relations with the United States to \u201cgo back to normal any time soon,\u201d calling the current situation \u201ca new normal that we have to get adjusted to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dan Driscoll says Wednesday is last day as Army secretary<\/p>\n

Driscoll posted his departure date on X late Tuesday, a day after the White House announced his resignation. A U.S. Army official said Monday that Driscoll submitted his resignation<\/a> after speaking with President Donald Trump<\/a> on the current state of the Army.<\/p>\n

Despite widespread reporting of tensions between Driscoll and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a>, Driscoll said it was an honor to serve under Hegseth and Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Soldiers, Civilians, and their Families are our Nation\u2019s very best, and they have inspired me every day,\u201d Driscoll wrote, crediting the Army\u2019s progress during his 18 months on the job with \u201cthe support of Secretary Hegseth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Driscoll\u2019s departure, however, follows Hegseth\u2019s ouster of one of his allies from the Army and the rollback of a drone program<\/a> he championed.<\/p>\n

Poll: A new high in Americans seeing government corruption as widespread<\/p>\n

Americans\u2019 belief that there is widespread corruption in the U.S. government has reached a record high, according to a new Gallup poll<\/a> released Wednesday.<\/p>\n

About 9 in 10 Americans \u2013 89% \u2013 say corruption is widespread throughout the U.S. government. That\u2019s up 10 percentage points from last year, and marks the highest measure recorded in Gallup\u2019s 20-year trend.<\/p>\n

There is bipartisan agreement that there\u2019s substantial government corruption. About 9 in 10 Democrats and independents say this, as well as roughly 8 in 10 Republicans. Democrats, however, have driven the recent jumps.<\/p>\n

When President Biden was in the White House, about 6 in 10 Democrats thought government corruption was widespread. That jumped to 76% during President Trump\u2019s first year back in office and now sits at 91%.<\/p>\n

Gallup found that in recent years, the U.S. has outpaced other countries with advanced economies when it comes to their perceptions of government corruption.<\/p>\n

JD Vance talks about end times and dark forces on Christian podcast<\/p>\n

Asked by Christian podcaster Bryce Crawford about his interest in the \u201cend times,\u201d the vice president laughingly said it had been more of an obsession during his youth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are, like, things about the world that make me feel, like, not shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us, but, again, I try not to focus too much on it,\u201d Vance said in the interview made public Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Crawford also asked Vance about Trump\u2019s post of an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus, which Crawford said offended him. Trump initially said he thought the image showed him as a doctor, then took down the post amid widespread criticism from even some of his own backers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did not mean to, like, mock or mimic God \u2014 that\u2019s just not who he is,\u201d Vance said, adding that the president often tries to keep things light.<\/p>\n

Bessent downplays effects of trade war with Canada<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Canadian deal has virtually no impact on American prices. No impact,\u201d he insisted Wednesday on \u201cFox & Friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bessent blamed the impasse and rounds of retaliatory tariffs from both sides on Canada\u2019s prime minister. He said \u201cCarney has made a political decision\u201d to stop a deal that \u201cwas on the 1-yard line.\u201d<\/p>\n

The secretary predicted that Carney \u201cwill have to come back\u201d for negotiations, and he suggested that the next deal the U.S. offers won\u2019t be as good.<\/p>\n

Bessent insists inflation is under control — and still blames Joe Biden<\/p>\n

He defended Trump\u2019s economic leadership on \u201cFox & Friends\u201d despite the president\u2019s plunging approval ratings on the economy over the course of this election year.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrices are too high,\u201d Bessent acknowledged.<\/p>\n

He blamed former President Joe Biden before he tacitly conceded that Trump\u2019s war in Iran has pushed energy prices and consumer prices higher. And he credited Trump for higher wages<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conflict in Iran will end, and prices will come down,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cOverall, prices are coming down. Core inflation is very under control. … We are helping Americans slowly get back on their feet. The Iran conflict will end, but the wage gains will stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bessent says Chevron is positioned for success in Venezuela<\/p>\n

The U.S. treasury secretary said on \u201cFox & Friends\u201d that \u201cno American firm knows how to operate in Venezuela better than Chevron.\u201d<\/p>\n

The international energy giant is poised to announce its planned investments in Venezuela<\/a> after the Trump administration announced a deal giving the U.S. government and private firms control of a sizable portion of the South American nation\u2019s oil.<\/p>\n

Bessent said Trump is \u201ccreating assets for the American people. It is going to push down oil prices, push up production\u201d to benefit U.S. consumers and the Venezuelan economy.<\/p>\n

Experts have repeatedly warned that Venezuela\u2019s dilapidated oil infrastructure<\/a> will require years of restoration work and tens of billions of dollars to resuscitate.<\/p>\n

US Treasury secretary says other nations should help \u2018asphyxiate\u2019 Iran to end the war<\/p>\n

Scott Bessent says multiple Trump administration officials are talking with other nations that are still dealing economically with Iran and pressuring them to stop<\/a>. But he avoided specifically mentioning Russia, even when asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy message to everyone is stay away,\u201d Bessent said Wednesday on \u201cFox & Friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all want this conflict<\/a> to end, and the fastest way for the conflict to end is for no one to provide any support to this regime. We are going to sever every tie that they have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Existing sanctions on Tehran<\/a> already are working to \u201casphyxiate the regime,\u201d Besssent said, and the statements from some Iranian leaders prove \u201call is not well in the economy\u201d there.<\/p>\n

Days after Trump announces Venezuela oil deal, White House fills in some of the details<\/p>\n

The White House on Monday said it\u2019s partnering with North American Blue Energy Partners as part of Trump\u2019s push to tap into Venezuela\u2019s oil industry<\/a>, setting up a deal that will give the Pentagon a stake in roughly a fifth of the country\u2019s vast oil reserves.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration released more details on Monday night, days after Trump announced what he described as the biggest oil deal in history<\/a>. Justice Department sues Kansas school system over transgender policies<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the school system in Kansas City, Kansas, over its policies on transgender students<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit comes more than a year after the Education Department first said it was investigating four districts in Kansas following a complaint from the Defense of Freedom Institute. The conservative group\u2019s complaint alleged the schools had policies preventing disclosure of a student\u2019s \u201ctransgender status\u201d to parents without the student\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n

Schools in Kansas City, Kansas, have a policy of using students\u2019 preferred names and pronouns. The district also says requests from students who do not wish to involve their parents will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, according to the Justice Department lawsuit.<\/p>\n

In April, the Education Department said it found the four Kansas districts in violation of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. The districts violated the privacy law, the department said, by maintaining a policy of not disclosing a student\u2019s gender transition at the parents\u2019 request, though the department did not cite a specific instance where this happened.<\/p>\n

Driven in part by his own experience with poverty as a child, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is pitching a financial literacy campaign<\/a> to leaders of the world\u2019s largest economies and suggesting an investment account program begun under President Donald Trump<\/a> as a model for it.<\/p>\n

As he hosted finance ministers from rich and developing nations in the G20, Bessent on Tuesday announced U.S. sponsorship for a competition called the \u201cFinancial Literacy Solutions Sprint.\u201d<\/p>\n

The competition is intended to discover and showcase \u201cinnovative technology- and data-enabled solutions\u201d developed across the Group of 20<\/a> countries to strengthen financial literacy.<\/p>\n

Four finalists will be pared to one or two winning teams and will be recognized during the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in October in Bangkok.<\/p>\n
