Prime Minister Mark Carney says he will keep any conversation with Vladimir Putin short if he comes face-to-face with the Russian president at the G20 summit later this year.<\/p>\n
The U.S. is hosting the annual gathering in Miami and U.S. President Donald Trump has said he’d like Putin to join. The Kremlin indicated in the spring that it’s possible Putin will take up the invitation.<\/p>\n
During an unrelated news conference on Thursday, Carney was asked about what he might discuss with Putin should he attend the summit in December.<\/p>\n
“The message will be simple: ‘Get out of Ukraine, give back all of Ukraine to Ukraine, end this war which is killing more than 30,000 of your people every single month,’ and I’d leave it at that to be honest,” Carney said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister was also asked if he thinks the Trump administration should withdraw the invitation. Carney said there are “valid reasons” to bar Putin but “it’s the host prerogative to invite who they invite.”<\/p>\n
Putin hasn’t attended a G20 summit since he launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The International Criminal Court has an active arrest warrant for the Russian leader.<\/p>\n
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hosted G20 finance ministers in Asheville, N.C., earlier this week with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in attendance.<\/p>\n
Finance Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne said Siluanov’s presence “created a lot of discomfort around the table.”<\/p>\n
“Canada is steadfast in our resolve to support the Ukrainian people and we have made sure that our discomfort is being heard,” he told reporters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit Canada next week, according to sources that spoke to Radio-Canada.<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy’s last visit to Canada was in December, when he met with Carney in Halifax before travelling to the U.S. to meet with Trump for talks aimed at ending the war.<\/p>\n
Carney’s message echoes former prime minister Stephen Harper’s meeting with Putin at the 2014 G20 summit. Harper reportedly told the Russian leader to “get out of Ukraine” after annexing Crimea.<\/p>\n
Russia has launched a barrage of drone strikes in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv over the past week.<\/p>\n
Despite the ongoing hostilities, both sides offered a rare upbeat assessment of peace prospects on Thursday with Putin saying a number of countries, including the U.S. and China, were ready to support a peace settlement.<\/p>\n
“Ultimately, however, the problem must be resolved by the countries involved in the conflict \u2014 Russia and Ukraine,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We are grateful to everyone attempting to contribute to a settlement. Is there a chance? In my view, yes, there is.”<\/p>\n
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told reporters in Kyiv: “I believe that we will now have a new dynamic in the peace efforts, with the return of this active phase of political and diplomatic engagement in many capitals around the world.”<\/p>\n
