Physically backed funds such as the iShares Gold Bullion ETF (CGL) or Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS) track the price of bullion directly and are qualified investments in registered accounts, with management fees ranging from roughly 0.16% to 0.55%, depending on the fund.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Gold mining stocks, held individually or through an index fund, offer a different kind of exposure tied to company earnings rather than the metal itself.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Physical gold bars or coins can also go inside a self-directed RRSP, but only through a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)-approved trustee and depository, and only if the metal is at least 99.5% pure. Bullion is up close to 25% over the past year but has already swung several per cent in the past week alone.
