OTTAWA, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday that his government will \u200cinvest C$4.7 billion ($3.41 billion) to build and maintain \u200cVIA Rail passenger cars in Canada, marking the first time \u200bin four decades that the rail company’s cars will be built domestically. <\/p>\n
“For the first time in four decades, VIA’s passenger cars will be produced and assembled in \u200cCanada. Cars that \u2060used to be built in the United States will be built right here in \u2060Thunder Bay at Alstom Canada,” Carney said at a news conference in Thunder Bay, Ontario. <\/p>\n
Carney said the \u200binvestment would \u200bbuild 313 new-generation passenger \u200bcars and support nearly \u200c700 jobs in Ontario and Quebec. <\/p>\n
The announcement comes amid a worsening trade war with the U.S. Canadian retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. annual imports are set to come into effect on September 8, \u200cin response to tariffs levied \u200bagainst Canada last month by \u200bU.S. President Donald \u200bTrump, affecting $20 billion of Canadian imports. <\/p>\n
Carney said \u200chis government was ready to \u200bsit down \u200band strike a trade deal with the U.S. when Washington is ready, but “there must be stability \u200band credibility” \u200cin any such agreement. <\/p>\n
