Its general government deficit, while worrying, isn&#8217;t all that high in relative terms.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/government-debt\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.S.%20government%20debt;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;U.S. government debt&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. government debt<\/a>, which has been putting pressure on Treasury yields amid concerns over long-term fiscal sustainability, pushed past US$40 trillion on Aug. 18.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Hanniman said other factors affecting the <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/bond-markets\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:bond%20markets;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;bond markets&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">bond markets<\/a> include a massive increase in corporate bond issuance, particularly among the companies behind the artificial intelligence boom, and continued concerns around the credibility of the Donald Trump administration&#8217;s policies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Despite challenges to Canada&#8217;s economy, including an escalating trade war with the U.S. and some internal referendum activity, the country has managed to avoid the one-time spikes in deficits and public struggles over fiscal consolidation that have occurred in countries including the U.K., Japan, France, and the U.S., he said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Those issues have made bond markets in those countries more sensitive to subsequent fiscal and policy developments. However, Hanniman said Canada&#8217;s fiscal situation is also very challenging, with no signs of relenting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Marc-Andre Pigeon, an assistant professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/university-of-saskatchewan\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:University%20of%20Saskatchewan&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;University of Saskatchewan&#039;s&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">University of Saskatchewan&#8217;s<\/a> Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy in Saskatoon, said the long-run trend in bond markets is toward rising yields despite some pullback from the highs earlier this week.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;We are in a budding legitimacy crisis, with once-stable global trade patterns being upended by tariff wars, hot wars, related geopolitical tensions, the demise of the rule of law towards the rule of the fist and ever-increasing climate shocks that will call into question the ability of any government anywhere to manage, stabilize and deliver on its promises,&#8221; he said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;(It&#8217;s) not because governments can&#8217;t pay \u2026 but because the economies and societies they are charged with stabilizing are struggling.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">However, Pigeon said Canada has unique characteristics that set it apart from other nations, including resource wealth and the underpinnings of a stable system.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;Canada is not immune from these broad meta-systemic trends beyond our borders.
