Three candidates for mayor put forward new campaign proposals Friday, touching on Winnipeg Transit safety, environmental policy, housing and industrial development.<\/p>\n
Candidate Mike Vogiatzakis is proposing a major overhaul of Transit security.<\/p>\n
He wants Winnipeg police to establish a dedicated unit responsible for safety on buses, at major stops and in Transit shelters.<\/p>\n
He also wants the city to go ahead with purchasing fully enclosed safety shields around bus drivers.<\/p>\n
“This is not a luxury for bus drivers. This is an urgent safety requirement protecting passengers,” Vogiatzakis, a funeral home director who registered his campaign in May<\/a>, said at a news conference at Winnipeg city hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n He also wants to introduce a free Transit safety pass. Riders would have to show identification to obtain the pass and scan it when boarding a bus.<\/p>\n Vogiatzakis says the system would allow the control centre to know who was on a bus in the event of a serious incident, and also help prevent people from riding without paying.<\/p>\n Woodstock pitches environmental platform<\/p>\n Don Woodstock released an environmental platform Friday that combines environmental measures with proposals he says could reduce municipal costs.<\/p>\n “We can do way better than what we have now,” he said. “We have opportunities in front of us to generate real income for citizens and Winnipeg.”<\/p>\n
