{"id":197919,"date":"2026-09-06T07:40:49","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T07:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/197919\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T07:40:49","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T07:40:49","slug":"man-who-pleaded-guilty-to-killing-three-cats-dies-before-sentencing-winnipeg-free-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/197919\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who pleaded guilty to killing three cats dies before sentencing \u2013 Winnipeg Free Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Winnipeg man awaiting sentencing after admitting he strangled three cats to death and dumped two of their carcasses under a city bridge, has died, the Free Press has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Randy Jensen, 25, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/breakingnews\/2026\/05\/13\/man-admits-to-killing-three-cats-dumping-two-under-bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pleaded guilty on May 13<\/a> to one count of wilfully causing injury or suffering to animals in connection to the 2024 killings.<\/p>\n<p>He was scheduled to be sentenced in January.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4521477_web1_241231_summit_bridge_cats_1.jpg\" data-pswp-width=\"2048\" data-pswp-height=\"1365\" data-pswp-><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4521477_web1_241231_summit_bridge_cats_1.jpg\" alt=\"JOHN WOODS \/ FREE PRESS&#10;                                Investigators were sent to this Summit Road bridge which crosses Sturgeon Creek to investigate dead cats found in December of last year.\"\/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>JOHN WOODS \/ FREE PRESS<\/p>\n<p>Investigators were sent to this Summit Road bridge which crosses Sturgeon Creek to investigate dead cats found in December of last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not something that anybody wanted,\u201d said Kristy Zamonsky, founder of Project Artemis Animal Advocates. \u201cWe were all hoping for justice through the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamonsky said Crown attorney Patrick Benjamin, who prosecuted the case, confirmed Jensen\u2019s death to her by email on Aug. 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this situation the charges are going to be dropped. That\u2019s how the process works in Canada,\u201d Benjamin wrote in the email shared with the Free Press. \u201cThis is obviously not what anyone wanted. This is sad news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Free Press could not confirm how Jensen died.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin and Jensen\u2019s lawyer, Brett Gladstone, did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen disposed of two of the animals underneath the Summit Road bridge, not far from his home, court heard in May.<\/p>\n<p>An area resident was out for a walk on Dec. 27 when he saw a dead cat under the bridge and assumed it had been killed by an animal, court heard. Jensen choked one of the cats at his home that same day. She said Nero, the white cat, is missing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first heard of his passing, I was just very angry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>McIvor had drafted a victim impact statement, but now she\u2019ll never get to read it with Jensen in court.<\/p>\n<p>Zamonsky said she plans to host a vigil for the cats on Sept. 13.
