Here&#8217;s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>What is the far-right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:According to the European Commission;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2019-12\/ran_fre_factbook_20191205_en.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">According to the European Commission<\/a>, the &#8220;extreme right&#8221; consists of five characteristics: nationalism, racism, xenophobia, calls for a strong state and an anti-democratic attitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yet the Commission said not all of these traits need to be present for it to qualify as far-right extremism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:Campaigners at Hope Not Hate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/hopenothate.org.uk\/2024\/08\/29\/call-them-what-they-are\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Campaigners at Hope Not Hate\u00a0<\/a>have also warned that the term is not interchangeable with fascism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They describe it is an umbrella term which encompasses the &#8220;radical right&#8221; \u2013 who still believe in the essence of democracy \u2013 and the &#8220;extreme far right&#8221; \u2013 who reject the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hope Not Hate then claimed the definition of &#8220;far right&#8221; has not been broadened in recent years, but what we see as normal has changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;More &#8216;mainstream&#8217; figures are increasingly crossing the line making it legitimate to use the term to describe them. The centre ground and conservative right are shifting rather than the definition expanding,&#8221; the campaigners said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They added: &#8220;You do not have to be part of a far-right organisation to be a far-right activist.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So what are the key differences between the far-right and the right-wing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As voices on the right grow stronger in both the UK and the US, the term &#8220;far-right&#8221; is often used as an insult, but they are fundamentally different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Nafeez Ahmed \u2013 author of <a data-ylk=\"slk:Alt Reich: The Network War to Destroy the West from Within;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/events\/alt-reich-the-network-war-to-destroy-the-west-from-within-an-evening-with-nafeez-ahmed\/london-gower-street\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Alt Reich: The Network War to Destroy the West from Within<\/a> \u2013 previously told HuffPost UK: &#8220;The right and the far-right are not the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The right is about conserving markets, liberty and nations within a democratic framework.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The far-right is anti-democratic: it thrives on conspiracy theories, scapegoating minorities and authoritarian &#8216;solutions&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Does anyone in the UK identify as far-right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:According to YouGov,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/society\/trackers\/what-political-alignment-is-the-british-public\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">According to YouGov, <\/a>only 3% of Brits identified themselves as &#8220;very right-wing&#8221;, while a further 9% describe themselves as &#8220;fairly right-wing&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That&#8217;s compared to 4% who describe themselves as &#8220;very left-wing&#8221; and 14% who say they&#8217;re &#8220;fairly left wing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Figureheads like <a data-ylk=\"slk:Nigel Farage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/news\/nigel-farage\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Nigel Farage <\/a>have been clear to reject the &#8220;far right&#8221; which says white people are being replaced by Black and brown migrants to attacks on fundamental rights \u2013 bleeding into mainstream politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;This signals a dangerous new phase.
