{"id":20080,"date":"2026-04-26T07:06:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T07:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/20080\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T07:06:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T07:06:07","slug":"permit-parking-to-begin-on-streets-near-golden-mile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/20080\/","title":{"rendered":"Permit parking to begin on streets near Golden Mile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Permit parking will be introduced on residential roads near Leicester&#8217;s Golden Mile this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Leicester City Council has approved plans for a scheme on seven streets to the east of Belgrave Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The restrictions, intended to address concerns about commuters and business vehicles persistently using the mainly terraced streets for free parking, will come into force on 1 June, the authority said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">About 560 homes and businesses fall within the new permit zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The council said it had consulted people in the area and 76% of responses supported the introduction of permits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Belgrave ward councillor Yogesh Chauhan said: &#8220;A lot of residents will be pleased but it won&#8217;t fix all the problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure everyone will be able to park outside their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll just have to see how it works out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Glendon Street in Leicester with cars parked along the road\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"679\" height=\"382\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/d21595b313b3981564f9e4fa639350a1.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Glendon Street is set to be included in the parking permit zone [Google]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Like other schemes in the city, residents&#8217; permits will cost \u00a335 per year, business permits will be \u00a3100 per year per vehicle &#8211; or \u00a3150 for transferable permits between vehicles &#8211; and visitor permits will be \u00a32 for 24 hours or \u00a340 per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Permits for landlords and carers will also be available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The streets set to be included in the scheme are:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Parts of Harrison Road, Halkin Street and Melrose Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Assistant city mayor for environment and transport Geoff Whitle said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen in other parts of the city how the introduction of residents&#8217; parking schemes can help tackle parking problems in local neighbourhoods and free up spaces for the people who live there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Ward councillors have worked closely with officers to design a scheme that will help address residents&#8217; concerns over problems caused by commuter and business parking outside people&#8217;s homes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The council said it would hold a drop-in session to help people through the permit application process at Disciples Followship Ministry Church, Harrison Road, between 13:00 and 16:00 BST on Wednesday 13 May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Follow BBC Leicester on <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LeicesterBBC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Facebook;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a>, on <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCLeicester\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:X;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">X<\/a>, or on <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bbcleicester\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Instagram;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Instagram<\/a>.
