People are being given the chance to have their say on proposals to cut speed limits to 20mph on more than two dozen roads.<\/p>\n
Westmorland and Furness Council is looking at the measure for parts of Eden, Furness and South Lakeland following suggestions by local parish and town councils.<\/p>\n
The plans will be on show at Ulverston’s Coronation Hall on Monday at the first of a series of drop-in sessions. Five more events will be held at other venues in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
Councillor Peter Thornton, cabinet member for highways and ICT, said the speed limits would only be implemented if there was public support.<\/p>\n
More than 40 other roads have already seen 20mph (32km\/h) zones introduced by the Liberal Democrat-led authority in recent years.<\/p>\n
“By reducing speed limits in key areas, we will not only improve safety, but also encourage walking and cycling, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable environment,” Thornton added.<\/p>\n
“All the schemes we have consulted on in the past three years have been put forward by communities and only ones with demonstrated public support have been introduced.”<\/p>\n
The second drop-in will be staged at the Masonic Hall in Kirkby Stephen on Wednesday with Windermere’s Marchesi Centre hosting an event on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Penrith Library, Walney Community Centre and Barrow Town Hall will hold sessions next month.<\/p>\n
All events will be between 15:00 and 18:00 BST.<\/p>\n
