It will begin at 25 billion Canadian dollars ($18 billion).<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The prime minister said the federal government will put up funds alongside private investors. The money will help fund projects Carney&#8217;s government is focused on building as Canada seeks to diversify away from the United States. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">U.S. President Donald Trump has been threatening Canada\u2019s economy and sovereignty with <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-tariffs-trump-3bcf97fc94c5b24324d255edc2f00d32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a>, most offensively by claiming Canada could be <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-us-state-131dcff58a8f56116765f160d9f35460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe 51st state.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Carney is former two-time central banker in England and Canada as well as chair of the board of directors for Bloomberg. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWe take a lesson from other jurisdictions that had the foresight many decades ago to start sovereign wealth funds,\u201d Carney said, \u201cIn some cases they began with a domestic focus then outgrew the scale of the domestic focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Sovereign wealth funds invest in assets such as stocks, bonds and real estate. They are typically funded by a country\u2019s budgetary surplus, which Canada currently does not have. The announcement comes a day before the Carney government announces its spring economic update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">There are over 90 sovereign wealth funds around the world that manage over $8 trillion in assets, according to The International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds, a London-based organization made up of roughly 50 of these entities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">Trump <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tiktok-wealth-fund-saudi-arabia-b71c92cb0deb1eb39352cd1cd4db4b98\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordered the creation<\/a> of U.S. sovereign wealth fund last year.
