Place \u201cbehind a giant banner reading \u2018Save the Caps\u2019\u201d ahead of the team\u2019s home game Saturday, as rumors \u201cswirl about the club\u2019s potential move,\u201d according to Gemma Karstens-Smith of the CP. A sold-out crowd of 27,589 people watched the Whitecaps down the Rapids 3-1, packing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/02\/02\/whitecaps-say-bc-place-no-longer-viable-as-mls-costs-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/02\/02\/whitecaps-say-bc-place-no-longer-viable-as-mls-costs-rise\/\">B.C. Place<\/a> for Vancouver\u2019s final home game before this summer\u2019s FIFA World Cup. Inside the stadium, more than 2,000 fans \u201cheld signs with the same \u2018Save the Caps\u2019 message as players walked out onto the field.\u201d The paper signs were placed by Vancouver\u2019s supporter groups before the game. Others brought their own messages of support, including a \u201cgiant banner reading \u2018We will fight for our club and we will win\u2019 next to an image of a fist.\u201d Chants of \u201cSave the Caps!\u201d also \u201crang out through the stadium\u201d after the American and Canadian national anthems. Whitecaps players said that they \u201csee the support fans are showing.\u201d Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen said that hearing and seeing the support was \u201cemotional.\u201d The message comes amid persistent rumors that the team \u201cwill soon be moved to an American market.\u201d The current ownership group announced the Whitecaps were up for sale in December 2024. Whitecaps CEO &amp; Sporting Dir Axel Schuster has repeatedly said that the priority is to \u201cfind a new owner who will keep the \u2018Caps in Vancouver.\u201d Earlier this month, Whitecaps MF Thomas M\u00fcller \u201ccalled on fans to show their support by coming out to home games\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianpressnews.ca\/sports\/vancouver-whitecaps-fans-bring-save-the-caps-campaign-to-b-c-place\/article_08765c0f-c902-5836-98e8-582eb73584e8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianpressnews.ca\/sports\/vancouver-whitecaps-fans-bring-save-the-caps-campaign-to-b-c-place\/article_08765c0f-c902-5836-98e8-582eb73584e8.html\">CP, 4\/26<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">RALLY THE TROOPS: CBC.ca\u2019s Karin Larsen wrote the club\u2019s longest running supporters\u2019 group &#8212; the Vancouver Southsiders &#8212; \u201cwant it shouted from the rooftops that they are not OK with the team leaving the city.\u201d The Southsiders are \u201casking anyone and everyone to show their love of the team by joining the Save The Caps pre-game march down Robson Street.\u201d Save The Caps was inspired by Columbus Crew fans, who organized against the MLS club being moved to Austin, Texas almost 10 years ago. The Save The Crew campaign came together after then-owner Anthony Precourt claimed that the team was \u201cnot financially viable\u201d in Columbus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/vancouver-whitecaps-save-the-caps-rally-9.7176492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/vancouver-whitecaps-save-the-caps-rally-9.7176492\">CBC.ca, 4\/25<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">AT SERIOUS RISK? In Vancouver, Patrick Johnston wrote it is \u201chard to fathom how a team at the top of the league,\u201d pulling in 25,000 fans, could be at \u201cserious risk of departure.\u201d But the \u201csilence\u201d from the Whitecaps about their future, be it a new owner or a plan for their own stadium, is \u201cmaking it clear that a bad future is becoming more likely.\u201d In the long term, the Whitecaps \u201cneed a stadium they can control.\u201d Johnston wrote there is \u201cjust no clear vision for that stadium future right now, even if there is the possibility of putting one at Hastings Park a half-decade or more down the road.\u201d However, with the \u201cexplosion of player quality and the addition of more designated players,\u201d putting a squad on the field has become \u201cfar more expensive.\u201d The biggest sources of commercial revenue in MLS &#8212; basically, ways you make money that is not from tickets &#8212; are \u201ctwo things that just aren\u2019t available to the Whitecaps: health care and gambling.\u201d The target figure identified by Schuster earlier this year \u201cremains daunting\u201d &#8212; $40M \u201cjust to get to league average in revenue generation\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/sports\/soccer\/mls\/vancouver-whitecaps\/time-running-out-whitecaps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/sports\/soccer\/mls\/vancouver-whitecaps\/time-running-out-whitecaps\">Vancouver PROVINCE, 4\/24<\/a>). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hundreds of Whitecaps fans marched to B.C.
