{"id":21939,"date":"2026-04-27T20:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T20:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/21939\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T20:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T20:01:10","slug":"calgary-police-10k-incentive-nets-32-applicants-amid-staffing-crunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/21939\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary police $10K incentive nets 32 applicants amid staffing crunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A $10,000 hiring incentive introduced in December to attract experienced officers to the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/tag\/calgary-police-service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Calgary Police Service;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Calgary Police Service<\/a> brought in 32 applicants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nine of those applicants have been selected for the service\u2019s spring class as part of the Direct Entry Officers program, to begin in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Direct Entry Officer (DEO) program <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/join.calgarypolice.ca\/experienced-officers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:is a streamlined recruitment program;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">is a streamlined recruitment program<\/a> aimed at attracting experienced officers to join the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/tag\/calgary-police-service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Calgary police service;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Calgary police service<\/a>. Unlike the training regiment for inexperienced recruits, which can take up to nine months to complete, experienced officers only need to undergo a seven-week training program and if successfully recruited would be eligible to earn $10,000 on top of their salary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/join.calgarypolice.ca\/experienced-officers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:In order to be eligible;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">In order to be eligible<\/a> for the incentive, an officer must have successfully undergone the direct entry program and then remain on the force for at least two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Recruits from the spring class will be the first officers to receive the incentive, according to the Calgary police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An emailed statement shared that police have noticed \u201can increase in interest in our DEO program since the incentive was introduced,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cHowever, recruitment activity is influenced by a range of factors, including seasonal trends and broader recruitment and marketing efforts, rather than any single initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The selection process for the fall class is currently underway and applications are open until July 31.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The incentive was introduced in December of last year to make joining the Calgary police force that more lucrative over its competitors, in a national pool challenged by staffing and recruitment constraints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" Herald<\/a>, Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan stated that staffing challenges remains top of priority when going into the next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf we don\u2019t have a healthy membership, we don\u2019t have healthy deployment models and healthy investigators,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A police commission report in September 2025 found that 19 per cent of CPS officers <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/mental-physical-toll-sidelining-nearly-223133779.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:were either on leave or removed from their usual
