{"id":23408,"date":"2026-04-28T18:57:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/23408\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T18:57:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:57:24","slug":"stm-once-again-extends-ban-on-loitering-in-montreal-metro-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/23408\/","title":{"rendered":"STM once again extends ban on loitering in Montreal Metro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Montreal\u2019s public transit agency has once again extended a ban on loitering in Metro stations, saying the policy makes the network safer for commuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The move-along order, which requires people in the network to be actively travelling, will now remain in effect until April 30, 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Originally introduced as a six-week trial in March 2025, the mandate gives\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Montr\u00e9al\u00a0(STM) special constables the authority to intervene when individuals use stations for reasons unrelated to transit, such as seeking shelter. It was <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/stm-no-loitering-1.7564814\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:renewed in June;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">renewed in June<\/a> of that year until the end of this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the STM, the measure was applied approximately 2,500 times per month this past winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Between November 2025 and March 2026, service disruptions of five minutes or more caused by &#8220;voluntary mischief&#8221; dropped by 22 per cent compared to the same period the year before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cTo continue improving metro ridership, we must continue to improve customers\u2019 sense of safety on the network,\u201d Aref Salem, a city councillor and the chair of the STM\u2019s board, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOf course, we are aware that mandatory travel cannot be the only tool. This measure is part of a set of measures that the STM is implementing to ensure safety and the feeling of safety on the network, and we will continue to enhance them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, advocates for those experiencing homelessness say the policy targets the city&#8217;s most vulnerable.
