{"id":2412,"date":"2026-04-13T08:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T08:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/2412\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T08:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T08:14:17","slug":"vancouvers-first-supertall-skyscraper-informed-by-sponge-reefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/2412\/","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver&#8217;s first supertall skyscraper informed by &#8220;sponge reefs&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio Henriquez Partners Architects has designed a trio of skyscrapers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vancouver\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver<\/a>, Canada, including the city&#8217;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/supertall-skyscrapers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supertall skyscraper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the larger Georgia &amp; Abbott development for developer Holborn Group, the trio of skyscrapers set to be built in the middle of the dense Canadian city will be anchored by a 1,033-foot-tall (314 metre-tall) skyscraper.<\/p>\n<p>When completed, 595 West Georgia Street\u202fwill be the first supertall skyscraper in the city \u2013 defined as a building exceeding 984 feet (300 metres).<\/p>\n<p>It\u202fwill be wrapped in a steel exoskeleton covered in white GFRP panelling, with highly translucent spans of glass covering the entirety.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/henriquez-partners-architects-vancouver-supertall-skyscrapers-georgia-abbott_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"Henriquez Partners Supertall skyscraper Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1616\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Henriquez Partners Architects has designed Vancouver&#8217;s first supertall skyscraper<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the design was based on the appearance of sea sponge reefs, with the studio hoping the skyscraper will play a positive role in the city&#8217;s environment \u2013 as sea sponges do in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The architectural expression of the project tells a story that is unique to British Columbia and inspired by rare and ancient glass sea sponge reefs \u2013 living structures found off the BC coast that demonstrate strength and adaptability,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/henriquezpartners.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Henriquez Partners Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This natural metaphor is expressed not only in distinct silhouettes and the sculptural form of its tallest tower, but in their environmental performance towards a net-zero carbon operation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At its top, the supertall skyscraper will be capped with a massive atrium holding a tree-filled public element, accessible by the public.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/henriquez-partners-architects-vancouver-supertall-skyscrapers-georgia-abbott_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x5.jpeg\" alt=\"Henriquez Partners Supertall skyscraper Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1418\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It has a form and facade pattern informed by sea glass sponges<\/p>\n<p>The other two skyscrapers in the complex, which will rise from the same podium, will be 783 feet (237 metres) and 889 feet tall (271 metres).<\/p>\n<p>The contemporary podium will incorporate the facade of the 1926 Randall Building, following Vancouver&#8217;s heritage preservation principles.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants, cafe and other retail elements will be accessible from a plaza set between the skyscrapers, with a separate rounded structure holding hospitality elements.
