{"id":25372,"date":"2026-04-29T23:43:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T23:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/25372\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T23:43:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T23:43:56","slug":"john-ware-school-judge-approves-payouts-for-calgary-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/25372\/","title":{"rendered":"John Ware School: Judge approves payouts for Calgary students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An Alberta judge has approved payouts in a multimillion-dollar class-action lawsuit by more than 50 former students of a\u00a0Calgary\u00a0junior high school who alleged abuse against two former teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Calgary\u00a0Court of King\u2019s Bench Justice Michele Hollins accepted the payouts in seven classes Wednesday. The maximum was a payout of $422,000, which is to be paid by May 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There are 12 complainants receiving the maximum payouts. Other complainants are to receive payments of $322,000, $222,000, $122,000, $72,000, $47,000 or $24,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The payments are determined on the amount and severity of abuse the victims were subjected to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThank you again, all of you, for your work on this and the legal of co-operation and organization has been very appreciated by this court,\u201d said Hollins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The lawsuit named the\u00a0Calgary\u00a0Board of Education and the teachers at John Ware School for alleged sexual, physical and psychological abuse from 1988 to 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Michael Gregory, who taught at the school for 20 years, was charged in 2021 with 17 counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. At the time, police said several former students had come forward with allegations against the teacher.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/R5X5S4E7E24VDXPO6YFR6C2B4Y.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Michael Gregory Michael Gregory. His death was not believed to be criminal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Fred Archer worked at the school in the 1990s. It also includes an opportunity for victims to collaborate with the division about policies and training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The\u00a0Calgary\u00a0Board of Education has apologized for the harm experienced by the class members.
