{"id":25959,"date":"2026-04-30T10:26:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T10:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/25959\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T10:26:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T10:26:31","slug":"carney-unveils-18-billion-canadian-government-owned-investment-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/25959\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney unveils $18 billion Canadian government-owned investment fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canada is developing a government-owned investment fund, Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-carney-us-trade-f5a635020c5032e91d4da24df9f62568\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said that the fund would invest in major Canadian industrial projects, in areas such as energy, infrastructure, mining, agriculture and technology. It will begin at 25 billion Canadian dollars ($18 billion).<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister said that the federal government will provide funds alongside private investors. The money will help finance projects that Carney&#8217;s government is focused on building, as Canada seeks to diversify away from the United States. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump has been threatening Canada\u2019s economy and sovereignty <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-tariffs-trump-3bcf97fc94c5b24324d255edc2f00d32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with tariffs<\/a>, most offensively by claiming Canada could become <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-us-state-131dcff58a8f56116765f160d9f35460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 51st U.S. state<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our former strengths built on our close ties to the United States have become our weaknesses,\u201d Carney said. \u201cThe U.S. has changed. That\u2019s their right and we are responding. That is our imperative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carney is a former two-time central banker in England and Canada, as well as ex-chair of Bloomberg&#8217;s board of directors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take a lesson from other jurisdictions that had the foresight many decades ago to start sovereign wealth funds,\u201d Carney said, \u201cIn some cases, they began with a domestic focus, then outgrew the scale of the domestic focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sovereign wealth funds invest in assets such as stocks, bonds and real estate. They are typically funded by a country\u2019s budgetary surplus, which Canada currently doesn&#8217;t have. The announcement came a day before Carney&#8217;s government is due to announce its spring economic update.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 90 sovereign wealth funds around the world that manage more than $8 trillion in assets, according to The International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds, a London-based organization made up of roughly 50 of these entities.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tiktok-wealth-fund-saudi-arabia-b71c92cb0deb1eb39352cd1cd4db4b98\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordered the creation<\/a> of U.S. sovereign wealth fund last year.
