{"id":27264,"date":"2026-05-01T04:52:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27264\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T04:52:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:52:27","slug":"guatemalan-dealer-who-sold-drugs-to-kids-caught-at-canada-border-after-hes-set-free-with-no-bail-da","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27264\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemalan dealer who sold drugs to kids caught at Canada border after he&#8217;s set free with no bail: DA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Guatemalan drug pusher who<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/15\/us-news\/long-island-frees-guatemalan-national-wilmer-castillo-garcia-without-bail-after-thc-gummies-middle-school-case\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> dealt gummies to Long Island kids<\/a> was cut loose with no bail \u2013 then caught trying to escape justice by running to Canada, authorities said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Wilmer Castillo Garcia, 22, was busted in August 2025 for selling cocaine to an undercover cop and pushing pot gummies to William Floyd Middle School students, with 12 of the kids ending up in the hospital but he was set free because of the state\u2019s \u201cbroken\u201d bail laws, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.<\/p>\n<p>The alleged dealer promptly fled Long Island but was busted at the US\u2019s northern border in October 2025, according to the DA.<\/p>\n<p>Wilmer Castillo Garcia, 22, was allegedly caught trying to flee to Canada in October 2025. Clark for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis defendant allegedly sold drugs to an undercover officer and is also allegedly connected to the hospitalization of multiple school children \u2014 yet, our prosecutors had no legal mechanism to ask for the court to set bail,\u201d Tierney said in statement.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia had been charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors, but Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/20\/us-news\/tempers-flared-in-suffolk-county-court-as-emily-finns-family-is-scolded-by-judge-for-angry-outbursts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Senft Jr.<\/a> released Garcia at his arraignment that same month because the charges are not eligible for bail under the state\u2019s controversial criminal justice reforms.<\/p>\n<p>The pusher was arrested by the Canada Border Services Agency during his attempt to enter the country, and handed over to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/16\/us-news\/nassau-county-breaks-its-own-rules-by-keeping-ice-detainees-too-long-activists-claim\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> that same day to be processed for deportation.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was returned to Suffolk County from ICE\u2019s custody at District Attorney Ray Tierney\u2019s request.  James Keivom for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>But he was instead returned to Suffolk County at Tierney\u2019s request, with the DA saying deporting Garcia would be allowing him to dodge prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily, the defendant was allegedly caught while attempting to flee across the border into Canada,\u201d Tierney said, thanking the Canadian border agents \u201cfor ensuring [Garcia] will face justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s immigration status wasn\u2019t immediately known and it was unclear if he had emigrated to the US or visited legally.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was arrested by the Canada Border Services Agency during his attempt to enter the country.
