{"id":27497,"date":"2026-05-01T10:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27497\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T10:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:10:09","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27497\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global stocks were mixed as many markets in the euro zone and in China were closed for holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were muted after the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq yesterday logged their biggest monthly gains in years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures were little changed after Canada\u2019s main stock market posted its biggest daily gain in a month yesterday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from TC Energy Corp., Imperial Oil Ltd., <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp., Colgate-Palmolive Co.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAs we enter May \u2013 traditionally a softer month \u2013 earnings resilience continues to offset geopolitical and inflation concerns,\u201c Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote, wrote in a note.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAI optimism remains the base case unless geopolitics deteriorate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 1.21 per cent in morning trading, while Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 slid 0.65 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.38 per cent higher. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices rose as efforts \u200bto resolve the Iran war remained \u200cat an impasse, with Tehran still blocking the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. Navy blocking exports of Iranian crude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures for \u2060July \u200bwere up 1.14 per cent to US$111.70 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate futures gained 0.48 per cent to US$105.60.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was down 0.6 per cent to US$4,592.99 an ounce and was on track for a weekly loss of about 2.4 per cent after dropping to a one-month low on Wednesday. U.S. \u200bgold futures for June delivery dipped 0.5 per cent \u200cto US$4,604.50.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar was flat against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.58 US cents to 73.69 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 2.7 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, edged up 0.02 per cent to 98.08. The U.S. dollar traded at $1.3579. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro climbed 0.03 per cent to US$1.1738.
