{"id":27541,"date":"2026-05-01T10:56:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27541\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T10:56:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T10:56:07","slug":"80-of-you-are-happy-with-how-carney-has-handled-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27541\/","title":{"rendered":"80% of you are happy with how Carney has handled Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eighty per cent of respondents to The Logic\u2019s latest subscriber survey are satisfied with Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s handling of U.S. tariffs and trade relations, but they are less enthusiastic about progress on the home front.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The survey, which was conducted prior to the prime minister\u2019s announcement of a sovereign wealth fund and the release of the spring economic statement this week, indicates that three-quarters of subscribers are satisfied with Carney\u2019s performance overall in the year since he took office\u2014a time period that has included everything from Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs to the beginning of the Iran war. The topic was by far the strongest showing for Carney among the five subjects respondents addressed in the survey, and the only one where the \u201cvery satisfied\u201d cohort outnumbered their \u201csomewhat satisfied\u201d counterparts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has consistently avoided being baited into unproductive conversations and is standing firm for Canadian values,\u201d one reader said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several readers praised Carney\u2019s \u201cbalance\u201d in negotiations with a difficult \u201cdance partner,\u201d but some took issue with the concessions made, including \u201ctrading away [Canada\u2019s] digital sovereignty.\u201d As part of negotiations, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2025\/06\/canada-rescinds-digital-services-tax-to-advance-broader-trade-negotiations-with-the-united-states.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rescinded<\/a> the digital services tax, which required large businesses\u2014including in the U.S.\u2014to pay three per cent tax on certain online revenues made by monetizing data from Canadian users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other subscribers lauded the prime minister\u2019s trade diversification efforts as \u201cplaying the long game,\u201d and expressed approval for his \u201chedging against the U.S.\u201d by strengthening ties with countries in Asia and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Americans will hopefully come to their senses at some point; if not, we need to build resilience and shift elsewhere,\u201d one respondent said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he has done a decent job diversifying trade and not letting Canada spiral like the U.S.,\u201d another reader said, \u201cbut I would like to see him make a bigger emphasis on tackling affordability at home.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Carney_progress_report-pie-chart_Q6_May-2026_FINAL.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"A pie chart titled &quot;Trade gets top marks: How satisfied are you with Carney's handling of Trump's tariffs?&quot; The options and responses read: Very satisfied (59%); somewhat satisfied (22%); neutral (6%); very dissatisfied (11%); somewhat dissatisfied (2%); and unsure (1%).\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>\t<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were split about Carney\u2019s progress on the cost of living in Canada, with 41 per cent satisfied, 40 per cent neutral and 18 per cent dissatisfied. Several respondents praised the repeal of the consumer carbon tax, but seemed more divided on the effectiveness of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/theres-supposed-to-be-a-tax-holiday-federal-gas-relief-isnt-much-for-canadians\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent<\/a> suspension of the fuel excise tax amid rising oil prices due to the Iran war. Many respondents, however, said external factors are largely at play, and that \u201cmuch is beyond the government\u2019s control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there is a lot of noise around cost of living, and real evidence of problems (e.g. higher food bank usage), it isn\u2019t clear to me what the biggest contributors are to that challenge,\u201d one respondent wrote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Carney_progress_report-pie-chart_Q4_May-2026_FINAL.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"A pie chart titled &quot;Cost crunch: How satisfied are you with Carney's progress on cost of living?&quot; The options and responses read: Very satisfied (11%); somewhat satisfied (30%); neutral (40%); very dissatisfied (12%); somewhat dissatisfied (6%); and unsure (1%).\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>\t<\/p>\n<p>Readers were similarly lukewarm on the Carney government\u2019s progress on housing affordability, with 35 per cent of respondents \u201cneutral,\u201d 40 per cent satisfied and 21 per cent dissatisfied. Last year, Carney announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/09\/14\/prime-minister-carney-launches-build-canada-homes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agency<\/a> to double the rate of homebuilding by 2035, but many respondents said they weren\u2019t holding their breath. \u201cIt takes time to build the underlying infrastructure for an educated way forward,\u201d one person said. \u201cA majority now will help with that, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some readers were less patient with Ottawa\u2019s promises <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/briefing\/new-ai-strategy-is-ready-to-go-but-delayed-by-world-events-solomon-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">around<\/a> a national strategy meant to outline the federal government\u2019s goals for artificial intelligence, with 26 per cent of respondents dissatisfied with progress on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Carney_progress_report-pie-chart_Q5_May-2026_FINAL.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey promised a strategy in 2025. It\u2019s Q2 [of] 2026 and nothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still waiting for the strategy\u2026 and others are moving faster.
