{"id":27899,"date":"2026-05-01T16:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T16:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27899\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T16:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T16:16:12","slug":"torontos-royal-conservatory-of-music-to-launch-external-probe-into-historical-sexual-abuse-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/27899\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto\u2019s Royal Conservatory of Music to launch external probe into historical sexual-abuse allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/FO7YYOAOGFGCHDVW77OK5YTCDQ.JPG?auth=2f79cd06f5f7235a8b258fbd9e8e41b42dddf0aef1f26d2b78987bc565717239&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">The Royal Conservatory of Music is seen in Toronto, on Friday.Giordano Ciampini\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Royal Conservatory of Music, one of Canada\u2019s most prestigious music-education institutions, says it will launch an external investigation into sexual-abuse allegations from the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Toronto institution said in a press release Friday that it has already conducted an internal review, and it was aware of public frustration about accountability and student safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The announcement did not name any individuals under investigation, but it followed numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/investigations\/she-told-her-daughters-that-boris-berlin-abused-her-now-this-toronto-family-wants-the-royal-conservatory-to-take-action-theyre-not-alone\/article_3a29e71b-2d7c-44a6-af55-a7d9593ca2de.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/investigations\/she-told-her-daughters-that-boris-berlin-abused-her-now-this-toronto-family-wants-the-royal-conservatory-to-take-action-theyre-not-alone\/article_3a29e71b-2d7c-44a6-af55-a7d9593ca2de.html\">reports from the Toronto Star<\/a> into allegations that influential music educator Boris Berlin sexually abused his students while at the institution. Berlin, who also wrote books on piano education and was an officer of the Order of Canada, died in 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">With an internal review now complete, the Royal Conservatory said, it plans to study further historical records with the participation of the University of Toronto, which ran the music institution until 1991. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A third-party investigation will begin once this work is completed, the press release said.
