{"id":3035,"date":"2026-04-13T16:20:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/3035\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T16:20:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:20:04","slug":"canadas-prime-minister-carney-nears-majority-government-in-special-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/3035\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s prime minister Carney nears majority government in special election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian<\/a> Prime Minister Mark Carney is on the verge of securing a majority government as special elections are held in three districts on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-liberals-election-majority-parliament-1b165c66e00a9f76b0072b815a458d5f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Votes are being<\/a> cast in the Toronto-area districts of Scarborough Southwest and University-Rosedale, which are considered safe seats for Carney\u2019s Liberals, and in the Montreal-area district of Terrebonne, which is considered a toss-up.<\/p>\n<p>Winning just one of them would give Carney a majority. The Liberals now have 171 members of Parliament in the House of Commons. They need 172 to secure a majority government, which would allow them to unilaterally pass any bill.<\/p>\n<p>Once the Liberals get that, they could stay in power until 2029 without the need for a new general election.<\/p>\n<p>The results are expected Monday night.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-liberals-conservative-defection-majority-government-b7a3714898eb6543fa4a80278cac89d2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Five defections<\/a> from opposition parties to Carney, including four from the main opposition Conservative party, have put Carney\u2019s Liberals on the cusp of the majority.<\/p>\n<p>One of those defectors referenced Carney\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-canada-davos-trump-eee151f749f35c8b30a9ff4a9525d0be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speech at the World Economic Forum<\/a> in Davos, Switzerland, as helping his decision.
