{"id":30943,"date":"2026-05-04T10:15:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T10:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/30943\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T10:15:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T10:15:10","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/30943\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were mixed amid the continued impasse in the Middle East as Iran warned U.S. forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-warns-us-navy-to-avoid-hormuz-after-trumps-offer-to-help-stranded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-warns-us-navy-to-avoid-hormuz-after-trumps-offer-to-help-stranded\/\">not to enter<\/a> the Strait of Hormuz after President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-may-3-peace-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-may-3-peace-proposal\/\">offer to \u201cguide\u201d<\/a> ships stranded there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in the red, while TSX futures edged lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from Gibson Energy Inc. and Cargojet Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Palantir Technologies Inc., Loews Corp. and Tyson Foods Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis week, earnings will continue to flow, with AMD and Arm Holdings in focus for the semiconductor space,\u201d Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote, wrote in a note.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cResults are expected to be strong, but whether they beat expectations will be key for the continuation of the rally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.17 er cent in morning trading. Germany\u2019s DAX rose 0.26 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 declined 0.52 per cent. British markets are closed for holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, markets in Japan and mainland China are also closed for holiday. Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng closed 1.24 per cent higher. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices were on the rise, supported by the absence of a U.S.-Iran peace deal that kept supplies constrained and prices above US$100 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures were up 1.5 per cent to US$109.60 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 0.96 per cent to US$102.90 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe broader market remains tightly supported by persistent supply disruptions and geopolitical uncertainty,\u201d said Priyanka Sachdeva, analyst at Phillip Nova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cUnless there is a clear and sustained resolution that restores normal flows through the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices are likely to remain elevated, with risks still tilted toward further upside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold eased 0.5 per cent to US$4,588.71 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery fell 0.9 per cent to US$4,600.60.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.47 US cents to 73.65 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 2.28 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, climbed 0.1 per cent to 98.26. The U.S. dollar traded at $1.3603. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro inched lower 0.03 per cent to US$1.1720. The British pound slid 0.1 per cent to US$1.3563. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was little changed at 4.379 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Euro zone\u2019s manufacturing PMI<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">10 a.m. ET: U.S. factory orders for March.
