Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are already dealing with controversy after hiring John Chayka. Finally, the Edmonton Oilers are facing the fallout of an early playoff exit and growing questions about the long-term futures of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Canucks Give Dorion a Look in GM Search

The Canucks appear to be casting a wide net in their search for a new general manager, and one name gaining traction is Pierre Dorion. Reports suggest Dorion has already received an initial interview, making him one of several candidates under consideration after Vancouver moved on from Patrik Allvin. What sets Dorion apart is his prior GM experience, having led the Ottawa Senators from 2016 to 2023.

Dorion’s résumé includes a run to the Conference Final in his first season, though his tenure ultimately shifted into a rebuild that ended with his dismissal early in 2023–24. Vancouver has also been linked to Shane Doan, Patrick Burke, Brad Pascall, and Bill Scott.

Still, Dorion’s interview suggests the Canucks may value proven front-office leadership as they look to stabilize hockey operations.

Maple Leafs Hire Chayka, Face Early Tampering Questions

The Maple Leafs made headlines by hiring Chayka as general manager and bringing in franchise icon Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor. However, the move didn’t come without controversy. Prior to the official announcement, a rival team raised a tampering concern with the NHL, alleging that individuals under contract—potentially from the Los Angeles Kings and Utah’s organization—were contacted about joining Chayka’s staff without permission.

MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley (Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images)

The NHL investigated and ultimately found no wrongdoing, informing CEO Keith Pelley that the matter was unsubstantiated. Still, speculation tied Chayka to names like Jake Goldberg and Chase Glasberg. The latter is related to Neil Glasberg, the owner of the search firm hired to help the Maple Leafs with their GM hire.

Despite being cleared, the situation highlights the scrutiny surrounding Chayka’s return, particularly given his past suspension by commissioner Gary Bettman during his time with the Arizona Coyotes.

Oilers Facing Pressure with McDavid, Draisaitl Window

After a disappointing first-round exit to the Anaheim Ducks, the Oilers are once again under the microscope, with attention shifting to the futures of McDavid and Draisaitl. While much of the focus has been on McDavid’s short-term deal and whether he’ll choose to ride out the full term, insider Pierre LeBrun pointed out that Draisaitl’s long-term contract doesn’t necessarily guarantee he’ll remain in Edmonton forever.

Draisaitl, who signed an eight-year extension in 2024, still has seven years remaining and a full no-movement clause. He was productive in the playoffs, but recently noted that he is concerned the team took a step back this season. In fairness, LeBrun didn’t say he’d heard any rumblings that Draisaitl wanted out. He’s simply pointing out a possible reality if the Oilers don’t turn things around.

LeBrun writes: “…nothing is stopping Leon Draisaitl from asking out one day if that’s what he wanted. Not saying he will nor do I have any feeling he will. But just because he signed an 8-year deal doesn’t mean he will necessarily play it out all in Edmonton.”

For now, Draisaitl’s future appears tied to McDavid’s. If McDavid were to reconsider his long-term commitment, it could trigger a ripple effect. That reality adds urgency for Edmonton, as their championship window—with both superstars—may not be as secure as it once seemed.

Free Newsletter

Get NHL Rumors coverage delivered to your inbox

In-depth analysis, breaking news, and insider takes – free.

Subscribe Free →

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Vancouver Canucks continue their GM search and may be eyeing experience in…

[7
461,7350,467,14328,48
0":"post-31324","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-toronto","8":"tag-connor-mcdavid","9":"tag-john-chayka","10":"tag-leon-draisaitl","11":"tag-pierre-dorion","12":"tag-toronto
["GET
