{"id":32614,"date":"2026-05-05T11:51:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T11:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/32614\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T11:51:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T11:51:26","slug":"canadas-cattle-ranchers-have-beef-with-south-american-trade-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/32614\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s cattle ranchers have beef with South American trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">Canada\u2019s beef producers are having a real cow over an in-the-works trade deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">What happened: The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA), an industry group representing the country\u2019s beef producers, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cattle.ca\/canadian-beef-producers-concerned-with-the-governments-direction-in-spring-economic-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">warning<\/a> that a free trade deal with South America\u2019s Mercosur bloc could flood Canada\u2019s market with beef from Brazil and Argentina, undercutting domestic ranchers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">Catch up: Beef is big business in Canada, contributing $34 billion to the economy and supporting just shy of 350,000 jobs, making it the third-largest employer in the agricultural sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">A severe drought that thinned cattle herds and strong consumer demand have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readthepeak.com\/p\/the-summer-barbecue-is-more-expensive-than-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">pushed<\/a> beef prices up 65% in the past decade, more than double overall inflation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">Canada\u2019s cattle herd is now finally increasing as producers respond to higher prices, but the Mercosur deal could \u201cdisincentivize the growth in our herd,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realagriculture.com\/2026\/04\/a-one-sided-deal-canadian-cattle-sector-pushes-back-on-mercosur-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">according<\/a> to CCA President Tyler Fulton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">Why it matters: Free trade deals always sound good in theory (especially when you\u2019re rapidly trying to diversify your export markets), but get messier when it comes to hammering out the details. Domestic industries that stand to lose market share can suffer, and that can create real political and economic difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\">What\u2019s next: The European Union faced similar protests from farmers over its trade deal with Mercosur and settled on a quota system that limited produce imports.
