The national initiative unites communities across Canada through a shared commitment to breast cancer research, culminating in the annual Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day, where participants take steps in support of progress in detection, treatment, and care.

This campaign goes beyond a single day. It builds momentum throughout the spring, bringing Canadians together in recognition of the mothers, grandmothers, sisters, coworkers, and friends who mean so much to them, while raising critical funds to advance personalized breast cancer research across Canada.

For Sandra Grant-Mentis, this year’s walk is monumental. Fifteen years ago, Sandra was a 43-year-old mom of three when she heard the words no parent expects: “You have breast cancer.” This Mother’s Day, she is celebrating a milestone many families once feared might never come, and she is inviting Canadians to help ensure more mothers get the same chance.

“Today, I’m still here, still a proud mom and grandmother in the stands, cheering on my kids and now my grandson. And it’s all thanks to research,” shares Sandra. “This Mother’s Day, I’m walking with purpose. Join me at Breast Cancer Canada’s Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day and help fuel progress for moms like me.”

Sandra’s diagnosis in 2010 came quickly after she noticed a small bruise and lump in her breast. What began as a subtle change led to a diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer. Today, 15 years later, she is cancer-free and living life to its fullest.

Her story reflects the progress made possible through research. However, with more than 30,000 Canadians diagnosed with breast cancer each year and 1 in 8 women affected in their lifetime, the need for continued investment remains urgent.

“Breast cancer isn’t one disease,” said Kimberly Carson, CEO of Breast Cancer Canada. “It requires personalized treatment approaches driven by research. Sandra’s story is proof that science saves lives, and that progress depends on sustained support.”

“Amoena, the global leader in breast care, is proud to sponsor Breast Cancer Canada’s Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day,” said Voula Pantelis, General Manager, Amoena Canada Inc. “Together we aim to help women following a breast cancer diagnosis, and ultimately, to find a cure. Empowering women to seek the best route for their treatment and recovery is what we are here for, every day.”

    Story continues

Individuals can participate solo or bring together a team including family, friends, patients, survivors and corporate groups.

“DSV has proudly stood behind the Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day for several years in support of breast cancer research across the country. This isn’t new for us, it’s a long-standing commitment to showing up, giving back, and standing beside the families and communities impacted by cancer,” said Michelle Wallace, DSV Global Transport and Logistics. “We are proud to once again support research that brings the latest science to families who need it most. For us, this walk is deeply personal. Many of us have felt the impact of cancer in our own lives, and this is our opportunity to turn that experience into action. It’s more than a walk, it’s a powerful show of community, compassion, and commitment.”

This Mother’s Day, participants across the country are encouraged to take part in the Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day, either in their own communities or through a virtual participation option, helping raise funds to advance earlier detection, improved treatment options, and more equitable access to care.

Supporters in the Greater Toronto Area are invited to join Breast Cancer Canada’s Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day in person at Streetsville Memorial Park.

Mississauga Event Details:

The Walk-a-Thon to Mother’s Day will feature a full morning of community celebration:

Date: Sunday, May 10, 2026
Registration: 9:00 AM
5KM Walk Start: 10:00 AM
Location: Streetsville Memorial Park, 355 Church St., Mississauga, ON

Breast Cancer Canada is pleased to welcome Dr. Marla Shapiro as our master of ceremonies.
