The State Department said <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/bureau-of-political-military-affairs\/2026\/05\/canada-c-17-sustainment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:in a news release;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">in a news release<\/a> that the potential transaction would be beneficial to Canada \u2014 and also to the United States \u2014 &#8220;by helping to improve the military capability of a NATO ally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It further said that &#8220;the proposed sale will improve Canada&#8217;s capability to meet current and future threats by ensuring the operational readiness of the Royal Canadian Air Force.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Its C-17 aircraft fleet provides strategic airlift capabilities that directly support U.S. and coalition operations around the world. Canada already operates C-17 aircraft and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces,&#8221; the State Department said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">U.S. approval of a foreign military sale is <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-services-procurement\/services\/acquisitions\/defence-marine\/us-foreign-military-sales-congressional-notification.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:a multi-step process;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a multi-step process<\/a>. Congress was notified of the possible transaction via Tuesday&#8217;s announcement from the State Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Canada has <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-national-defence\/services\/procurement\/cc-177-globemaster.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:a fleet of five;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a fleet of five<\/a> C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, which are based out of 8 Wing Trenton in eastern Ontario. The oldest of the planes <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/air-force\/corporate\/squadrons\/429-squadron.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:entered service in 2007;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">entered service in 2007<\/a>. The newest of the five aircraft was delivered in 2015.
