{"id":35438,"date":"2026-05-07T09:27:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T09:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/35438\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T09:27:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T09:27:33","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/35438\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were mixed as investors eyed the prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace deal, even as the fate of the critical Strait of Hormuz appeared unresolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures edged up after the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq closed at fresh record highs yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from BCE Inc., Aritzia Inc., Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Premium Brands Holdings Corp., Pembina Pipeline Corp., Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Chartwell Retirement Residences and Canadian Apartment Properties REIT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from McDonald\u2019s Corp., Shell PLC, Gilead Sciences Inc. and Airbnb. Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While the Middle East situation was uncertain, \u201cthe momentum is going in a good direction\u201d and markets had taken note of it, Lombard Odier chief economist \u200bSamy Chaar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.14 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 declined 0.6 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX edged down 0.07 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 inched up 0.06 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, trading returned at Japan\u2019s Nikkei after an extended break, closing 5.58 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng gained 1.57 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices extended losses on renewed hopes for a U.S.-Iran peace deal that could bring a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures fell 1.6 per cent to $99.65 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lost 1.7 per cent to trade at $93.44. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cFrom a broader perspective, oil markets have remained stuck between diplomacy and disruption for more than two months, with investors\u2019 emotions being manipulated by headlines almost daily,\u201d said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIf a formal deal eventually materializes, oil prices could witness a free fall as geopolitical premiums rapidly evaporate from the market. However, any fresh signs of attacks on oil infrastructure or escalation in the Middle East could easily trigger another parabolic spike in crude prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was up 1 per cent to US$4,738.86 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery gained 1.2 per cent to US$4,748.50.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.28 US cents to 73 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 1.38 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, slid 0.16 per cent to 97.87. The dollar was pegged at $1.3625. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro climbed 0.18 per cent to US$1.1770. The British pound advanced 0.2 per cent to US$1.3619. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last down at 4.340 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China\u2019s foreign reserves<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Euro zone\u2019s retail sales<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Germany\u2019s factory orders<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. initial jobless claims for week of May 2.
