{"id":35815,"date":"2026-05-07T16:22:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/35815\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T16:22:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:22:31","slug":"three-canadians-isolating-in-ontario-quebec-after-hantavirus-outbreak-on-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/35815\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Canadians isolating in Ontario, Quebec after hantavirus outbreak on cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/C5MAA5PGPFFLTFO4WNJIO6Y3UQ.jpg?auth=9f246c940e7032e4f83bf5009a83169953f2636cc52c81e6c5239beb55c9f2ab&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A person in a hazmat suit is escorted to an ambulance from a medical aircraft believed to be carrying some of the passengers from the cruise ship, at Schiphol airport near Amsterdam on Wednesday.Peter Dejong\/The Associated Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Two Canadians who disembarked a cruise ship that\u2019s been hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak are in Ontario and have been isolating since they returned home, the province\u2019s health minister says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A third person who was not on the hantavirus-stricken ship but was on the same flight home as the two Canadians who left the vessel is now isolating in Quebec, federal officials say. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Anita Anand, the foreign affairs minister, says a Canadian who \u201cmay have come into a contact with a symptomatic individual\u201d is among those being monitored by local authorities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Anand says Ottawa is sending consular officials to support Canadians on the cruise ship where the hantavirus outbreak has led to three deaths. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-what-is-hantavirus-cruise-ship-outbreak-symptoms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What is hantavirus, how does it spread and what are the symptoms?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones said it is believed that they are not a transmission risk, but the situation is fluid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jones says the province is preparing to see if there are any other individuals who need to return to Canada and Ontario. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She says the incubation and monitoring period will likely be around 30 days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Earlier this week, Global Affairs Canada said there were four Canadians among the nearly 150 people stranded aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship off the west coast of Africa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Countries worldwide are seeking to prevent further spread of the hantavirus on Thursday, after an outbreak on the cruise ship, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-hantavirus-outbreak-cruise-ship-2\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-hantavirus-outbreak-cruise-ship-2\/\">tracking those who had already disembarked<\/a> before the virus was detected and anyone in close contact with them since. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Three people \u2013 a Dutch couple and a German national \u2013 died in the outbreak on the MV Hondius.
