<\/p>\nBy the time you\u2019re reading this, Canada is finally starting to thaw.<\/p>\n
There are small signs at first. Snowbanks shrink ever so slightly, the sun lingers a bit longer in the evenings, and people begin to emerge again, not in full summer mode, but with a cautious optimism that the worst might be behind them. It feels like the country is waking up.<\/p>\n
Which makes it a strange time to reflect on winter, because in truth, I\u2019ve only seen a slice of it.<\/p>\n
We arrived here in February, not exactly ideal timing if you\u2019re trying to ease yourself into Canadian life. It was straight into the deep end.<\/p>\n
No gentle introduction, no crisp autumn or festive December build-up.<\/p>\n
But strangely, when we first arrived, it wasn\u2019t actually as cold as we\u2019d expected.<\/p>\n
For a brief moment, it felt like we might have got lucky. That didn\u2019t last long. Within a couple of weeks, the temperatures dropped properly, and we got our first real taste of what Canadian cold actually feels like.<\/p>\n
What struck me most wasn\u2019t just the temperature, it was how different winter is here compared to back home.<\/p>\n
Change from home<\/p>\n
In Fermanagh, winter is wet, grey, and relentless in its own way. It seeps into your bones because you\u2019re always damp, always dodging rain, always waiting for a break in the weather that rarely comes.<\/p>\n
Here, it\u2019s the opposite.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s cold, yes \u2014 but it\u2019s a dry cold. And more surprisingly, it\u2019s bright. Blue skies are common, even on freezing days.<\/p>\n
The sun shines far more than I expected, which makes a huge difference mentally. You can be absolutely frozen, but if the sky is clear, it somehow feels manageable.<\/p>\n
And then there\u2019s the snow.<\/p>\n
At the start, it\u2019s exactly what you imagine, scenic, almost magical. The kind of thing you\u2019d happily take photos of and send home.<\/p>\n
Streets covered in white, mountains looking even more dramatic, everything feeling clean and still.<\/p>\n
But after a while, it just becomes\u2026 normal.<\/p>\n
You stop noticing it. It\u2019s no longer an event, just part of daily life. Something to walk through, drive through, shovel, and occasionally slip on. The novelty fades quicker than you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n
One thing I didn\u2019t expect at all is this: it\u2019s been nearly three months without seeing rain.<\/p>\n
Slowly adjusting<\/p>\n
Coming from Fermanagh, that almost doesn\u2019t make sense. Rain is such a constant part of life back home that you don\u2019t even think about it, it\u2019s just always there in the background.<\/p>\n
Here, you suddenly realise how much of your routine was built around it.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t missed it, to be honest.<\/p>\n
What I have had to learn, though, is how to actually dress for winter. Layers are everything.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Charlotte and Patrick are settling into life in their new country.<\/p>\n
The right coat isn\u2019t a luxury, it\u2019s essential. And good boots might be the most important purchase you make. It\u2019s not about braving the cold it\u2019s about respecting it and being prepared.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s probably the biggest takeaway from my first Canadian winter: life doesn\u2019t stop because of the weather.<\/p>\n
People still go out, still socialise, still exercise, still get on with things.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no sense of waiting it out. Instead, everything is adapted to it.<\/p>\n
Roads are cleared, buildings are heated properly, and daily routines continue regardless of what the thermometer says.<\/p>\n
It forces you to adjust your mindset as much as your wardrobe.<\/p>\n
Now, as spring slowly arrives, there\u2019s a real sense of appreciation in the air.<\/p>\n
People seem lighter, more energetic, as if they\u2019ve collectively made it through something.<\/p>\n
And even though I didn\u2019t experience the harshest months, I can understand that feeling.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve had a taste of it, enough to know it\u2019s no joke, but also enough to see why people here take a certain pride in getting through it each year.<\/p>\n
