{"id":36571,"date":"2026-05-08T02:11:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T02:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/36571\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T02:11:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T02:11:32","slug":"bell-canada-parent-company-bce-inc-fires-employees-who-faked-office-attendance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/36571\/","title":{"rendered":"Bell Canada parent company BCE Inc. fires employees who faked office attendance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some employees at one of Canada\u2019s major telecommunications companies are out of a job after faking their workplace attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bell Canada\u2019s parent company BCE Inc. said a handful of workers were found to be abusing the company\u2019s attendance policy, which requires employees to be in the office three days a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFollowing an internal review, BCE terminated employment in a small number of individual cases for clear violations of our code of conduct,\u201d BCE said in a statement to the Toronto Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese cases involved deliberate and repeated falsification of workplace attendance, including entering the workplace to record attendance and then leaving the premises, also known as \u2018swipe and go.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendance scam at offices across country<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The workplace attendance scam occurred at offices across the country and the terminations didn\u2019t involve any unionized employees, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">BCE didn\u2019t say how many workers lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn each case, there was a thorough investigation and individuals were presented with clear evidence of their misconduct,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe majority of individuals admitted to deliberate and repeated falsification of workplace attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Punched in to use gym<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The news of the firings was first reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-bell-parent-bce-employees-falsified-attendance-swipe-and-go\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:The Globe and Mail;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;The Globe and Mail&quot;}\" class=\"link \">The Globe and Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In one reported case, an employee would go to the office just to use the gym before leaving. Another saw a worker clock in shortly before midnight and again after midnight to appear as if they were on the job for two separate days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Those workers who violated BCE\u2019s employee code of conduct were terminated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The firings come at a time when some companies and governments are increasing employee\u2019s weekday office attendance in an effort to strengthen return-to-office protocols and slowly move away from hybrid work models following the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Return-to-work and hybrid policies<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In February, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/government\/publicservice\/hybrid-work\/common-hybrid-work-model\/message-deputy-heads-increasing-onsite-presence-public-service.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:federal government;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/statement\/1006309\/ontario-public-service-returning-to-office-full-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:province;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" beginning of the year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/city-government\/accountability-operations-customer-service\/city-administration\/corporate-policies\/people-equity-policies\/remote-work-policy-hybrid-work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:City of Toronto;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" Toronto<\/a> said all eligible employees are required to perform their duties a minimum of three days at their office location and the rest of the week at a remote work location, according to its remote work policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, municipal division heads are expected to work a minimum of four days per week at their city work location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The city stresses that work arrangements are flexible and reasonable depending on operational requirements.<\/p>\n<p>RECOMMENDED
