{"id":36898,"date":"2026-05-08T09:20:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T09:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/36898\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T09:20:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T09:20:10","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/36898\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets slipped as the U.S. and Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-iran-us-war-peace-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-iran-us-war-peace-talks\/\">exchanged fire<\/a> in the Middle East, dampening hopes of a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory after major North American markets closed lower yesterday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher ahead of Canadian and U.S. jobs data later this morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from Brookfield Asset Management Ltd., Telus Corp., Enbridge Inc., Algonquin Power &amp; Utilities Corp. and Emera Inc. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe market seem to be taking every chance \u200cto price in a quick end to the war,\u201d said Jan von Gerich, chief analyst at Nordea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cBut it seems unlikely there\u2019s going to be an agreement. I still think there are going to be disruptions in the Strait [of Hormuz] for a longer time and it won\u2019t be resolved any time soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.81 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 slid 0.68 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX fell 0.96 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gave back 0.8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.19 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng fell 0.87 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices were steady after renewed fighting broke out between the United States and Iran, threatening a shaky ceasefire and dashing hopes for progress to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for oil and liquefied natural gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures were little changed\tat $100.20 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipped 0.36 per cent to $94.47 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe market is on the cusp of a complete breakdown,\u201d said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market analysis provider Vanda Insights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cPrice formation is no longer anchored in a pragmatic reading of the war\u2019s trajectory or the physical realities in the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was up 0.85 per cent to US$4,709.06 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery rose 0.1 per cent to US$4,716.50.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.16 US cents to 73.27 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 1.35 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, declined 0.1 per cent to 97.97. The dollar was pegged at $1.3656. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro climbed 0.33 per cent to US$1.1763. The British pound advanced 0.44 per cent to US$1.3611. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last down at 4.370 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China\u2019s aggregate yuan financing, new yuan loans and trade surplus<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan\u2019s real cash earnings and services and composite PMI<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Germany\u2019s industrial production and trade surplus<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canadian employment for April. The Street is expecting a flat reading month-over-month with the unemployment rate remaining 6.7 per cent and average hourly wages up 4.6 per cent year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. nonfarm payrolls for April.
