Industry groups are urging action.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Industry groups want Canada to have <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canada-needs-a-national-semiconductor-strategy-industry-groups-argue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">a standalone national semiconductor strategy<\/a>. A Liberal MP said this week that a national strategy is a \u201cstand-out\u201d priority. But Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon says Canada will not pursue one.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview at Chips North on Tuesday, Solomon told BetaKit that Canada already has a strategy around semiconductors, as a lot of the country\u2019s compute programs will apply to semiconductor companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada has incredible assets \u2026 but perhaps we haven\u2019t spent time to define a clear path as to how we scale them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenna Sudds, Liberal MP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the AI strategy is to develop domestic capabilities, but we are not gonna have \u2026 a separate semiconductor national strategy, specifically on that,\u201d Solomon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the upcoming AI strategy\u2019s six pillars teased in the <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canadian-spring-economic-update-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Spring Economic Update<\/a> is titled \u201cBuilding the Canadian Sovereign AI Foundation,\u201d meant to support building the country\u2019s sovereign compute infrastructure at scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This past December, <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canada-needs-a-national-semiconductor-strategy-industry-groups-argue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">industry groups warned<\/a> that Canada is the only G7 country without a national semiconductor strategy; they argued that the gap could threaten Canada\u2019s competitiveness, capacity to scale innovation, and ability to exercise technological sovereignty over the digital economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In her opening remarks at the semiconductor industry conference on Tuesday morning, Kanata MP Jenna Sudds also noted how Canada lags its G7 peers in this regard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada has incredible assets \u2026 but perhaps we haven\u2019t spent time to define a clear path as to how we scale them,\u201d Sudds said, adding that developing a national semiconductor strategy is a \u201cstand-out\u201d priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canada-to-create-ai-and-labour-advisory-council-solomon-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Canada to create AI and Labour Advisory Council, Solomon says<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When asked on stage where semiconductors fit into the AI strategy, Solomon noted existing programs like the <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/federal-government-outlines-2-billion-in-ai-compute-spending-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Sovereign AI Compute Strategy,<\/a> the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/innovation-science-economic-development\/news\/2024\/07\/government-of-canada-supporting-manufacturing-and-commercialization-of-semiconductors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">$120 million contribution<\/a> to the Fabrication of Integrated Components for the Internet\u2019s Edge (<a href=\"https:\/\/fabricinnovation.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FA<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fabricinnovation.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">B<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fabricinnovation.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rIC<\/a>) challenge, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/ottawa-plans-to-spin-off-federal-semiconductor-facility-into-commercial-entity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">spinout<\/a> of the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSemiconductors are going to be an important part of the strategy, but the main thrust of the strategy is going to be building the major infrastructure pieces, making sure that we\u2019ve got the talent, \u2026 and making sure that we\u2019re building what we call pro-worker industrial AI,\u201d Solomon said on stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Solomon also noted to BetaKit the $5-billion <a href=\"https:\/\/ised-isde.canada.ca\/site\/ised\/en\/programs-and-initiatives\/strategic-response-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Strategic Response Fund<\/a> (SRF). The fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/09\/05\/prime-minister-carney-launches-new-measures-protect-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">launched in September 2025<\/a> as a successor to the Strategic Innovation Fund, with a focus on helping sectors impacted by tariffs. It <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canadian-governments-open-arms-and-wallets-to-us-chipmakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">provided<\/a> $210 million to IBM and other semiconductor firms in Bromont, Que., in December to build out semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put a fair bit of money and a fair bit of strategy towards it already,\u201d Solomon said.<\/p>\n<p>Feature image courtesy Chips North.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canada is the only G7 country without a standalone strategy.
