Funeral director Mike Vogiatzakis has registered to run for mayor of Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
Vogiatzakis, who directs Voyage Funeral Homes and Crematorium, filed his registration papers Thursday.<\/p>\n
He is the third candidate to register for the Oct. 28 election. Scott Gillingham, Winnipeg’s current mayor, and grocery clerk Chris Clacio registered one week ago.<\/p>\n
Vogiatzakis also registered to run for mayor in 2014 but did not end up on the ballot because he did not complete the nomination process.<\/p>\n
The city barred him from running for office in 2018 because he did not file audited campaign expenses in 2014.<\/p>\n
Vogiatzakis said on Facebook his campaign will involve “public safety, roads, transit, homelessness, addiction, accountability at city hall, support for businesses, affordability, infrastructure and restoring pride in our city.”<\/p>\n
He also said he chose to run again after his brother Kyriakos Vogiatzakis was killed in 2024 in an altercation outside the latter’s Winnipeg restaurant, Cork & Flame. In February, Manitoba’s Court of King’s Bench found Curtis Dalebozik guilty of manslaughter and uttering threats in the killing.<\/p>\n
While mayoral candidates may register now, candidates for councillor and school trustee must wait until June 30 to register their campaigns.<\/p>\n
The nomination period for mayor, council and school trustee candidates is Sept. 16-22.
