{"id":40203,"date":"2026-05-11T09:59:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T09:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/40203\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T09:59:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T09:59:06","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/40203\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were mixed as stalled U.S.-Iran peace \u200bnegotiations \u200cweighed on risk appetite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were muted after major North American markets closed higher on Friday<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures were in the red.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from Barrick Mining Corp., Ovintiv Inc., Chemtrade Logistics Income Fund, Cronos Group Inc., CT REIT, Minto Apartment REIT and Trican Well Service Ltd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Fox Corp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe conflict in the Middle East is now entering its 11th week,\u201d noted Bruce Kasman, global head of economics at JPMorgan. \u201cEnergy prices have surged but remain at levels that are headwinds rather than expansion-ending obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.2 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 0.25 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX slid 0.18 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 retreated 0.98 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.47 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng edged up 0.05 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices rallied a day after President Donald Trump said Iran\u2019s response to a U.S. peace proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-iran-us-war-middle-east-ceasefire-may-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-iran-us-war-middle-east-ceasefire-may-10\/\">was \u201cunacceptable,\u201d<\/a> raising supply fears as the Strait of Hormuz stayed largely closed, which kept the global market tight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures climbed5 2.6 per cent to $103.80 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 2.3 per cent to $97.64 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe oil market continues to trade like a geopolitical headline machine, with prices swinging sharply based on every comment, rejection, or warning coming from Washington and Tehran,\u201d said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold fell 0.8 per cent to US$4,676.02 an \u200counce. U.S. gold futures for June delivery lost 1 per cent to trade at US$4,684.50.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 73.01 US cents to 73.18 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 0.91 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, climbed 0.09 per cent to 97.99. The dollar was pegged at $1.3671. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro declined 0.13 per cent to US$1.1774. The British pound slid 0.2 per cent to US$1.3606. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.387 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China\u2019s CPI, PPI, aggregate yuan financing, new yuan loans and trade surplus<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">10 a.m. ET: U.S. existing home sales for April.
