{"id":41506,"date":"2026-05-12T05:01:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T05:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/41506\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T05:01:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T05:01:22","slug":"mark-carney-tells-irish-business-leaders-of-canadas-desire-for-closer-trade-links-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/41506\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Carney tells Irish business leaders of Canada\u2019s desire for closer trade links \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Canadian prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> held a closed-door meeting with a group of 150 Irish business leaders in Ottawa on Monday, as he continues to pursue a strengthening of ties between his country and Europe amid the recent straining of relations between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\">Canada<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group, which travelled to Canada over the weekend as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ey-entrepreneur-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ey-entrepreneur-of-the-year\/\">EY Entrepreneur of the Year<\/a> awards programme, was granted a private audience with the former Bank of England governor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/canada\/2025\/03\/10\/mark-carney-canada-prime-minister-us-tariffs-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/canada\/2025\/03\/10\/mark-carney-canada-prime-minister-us-tariffs-donald-trump\/\">ex-Irish passport holder<\/a> at the residence of the Irish ambassador to Canada. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is the second time in as many months that the Canadian premier has visited the embassy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although the discussion was behind closed doors, Carney is understood to see Ireland as an important bridge with Europe. He is poised to visit the Republic over the coming months with Ireland set to begin its six-month presidency of the EU in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among other things, he wants Europe to urgently ratify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ceta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ceta\/\">Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement<\/a> (Ceta) between Canada and the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish ratification of Ceta was blocked by the Supreme Court in 2022. Last week, however, the Government brought legislation, already passed by the D\u00e1il, to the Seanad that when passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/04\/government-prepares-to-ratify-canada-trade-deal-before-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/04\/government-prepares-to-ratify-canada-trade-deal-before-summer\/\">will pave the way<\/a> for Ceta\u2019s ratification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The free trade elements of Ceta, which included an abolition of almost all tariffs previously in place between Canada and the EU, have been provisionally in place since 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In that time, there has been more than a tripling of trade between Ireland and Canada, from \u20ac3 billion to \u20ac10 billion annually, and a quadrupling of the value of Irish exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carney has said he wants to \u201ccatalyse\u201d 1 trillion Canadian dollars in investment over the next five years, and is keen to attract more Irish companies to invest in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/01\/27\/could-ireland-be-the-connecting-point-for-a-subsea-super-cable-linking-europe-and-canada\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Could Ireland be the connecting point for a subsea super-cable linking Europe and Canada?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland is Canada\u2019s 10th biggest export partner with Irish companies supporting about 32,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carney wants to double Canada\u2019s non-US exports, and has looked to strengthen his country\u2019s ties to Europe and pursue free trade agreements with other blocs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Given the uncertainty over trade with a Donald Trump-led United States, it makes sense for Ireland to ratify Ceta at the earliest opportunity.
