Ltd., Brookfield Corp., Quebecor Inc., Keyera Corp. and Canada Goose Holdings Inc. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Applied Materials Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, said markets were looking for the absence of a new \u200bshock. \u201cSo far, that seems to be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWith expectations low and AI momentum still \u200cstrong, investors are treating vague diplomacy as a reason to move on rather than a reason to de-risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.46 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 0.22 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX gained 1.2 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 advanced 0.61 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.98 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng was little changed. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices edged higher as \u200bmarkets focused on the meeting between \u200cU.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to see if it will yield any positive results toward a resolution for the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Trump is expected to encourage China \u2060to \u200bconvince Tehran to make a deal with Washington to end the conflict, but analysts doubt that Xi will be willing to push China\u2019s long-time strategic partner too hard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures were up 0.58 per cent to US$106.20 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures \u200cadded 0.3 per cent to trade at US$101.30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOil prices are in a wait-and-see mode,\u201d ING analysts said in a note on Thursday, adding that the market could be pinning too much hope on the U.S.-China talks yielding some positive results on the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold inched up 0.4 per cent to US$4,707.08 an ounce. U.S. gold \u200bfutures for June delivery rose 0.4 per cent to US$4,713.80.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar was little changed against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.89 US cents to 72.99 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 0.01 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, edged down 0.03 per cent to 98.49. The dollar is pegged at $1.3705. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro declined 0.07 per cent to US$1.1711. The British pound slid 0.09 per cent to US$1.3516. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last down at 4.467 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan\u2019s current account surplus<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">5 a.m. ET: Canada\u2019s existing home sales and average prices. Home sales in Canada rose 0.7 per cent in April, the first increase in half a year as falling home prices brought potential buyers back into the market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-national-home-sales-tick-up-07-in-april\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-national-home-sales-tick-up-07-in-april\/\">Rachelle Younglai writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">5 a.m. ET: Canada\u2019s MLS Home Price Index for April. Estimate is a year-over-year slide of 4.0 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canadian wholesale trade for March. Consensus is a rise of 1.4 per cent from February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canada\u2019s new motor vehicle sales for March. Estimate is a decline of 8.0 per cent year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. initial jobless claims for week of May 9. Estimate is 205,000, up 5,000 from the previous week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. retail sales for April. The Street expects a rise of 0.5 per cent from March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. import prices of April.
