{"id":4510,"date":"2026-04-14T12:32:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T12:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/4510\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T12:32:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T12:32:22","slug":"canada-tourists-deal-economic-blow-by-skipping-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/4510\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada tourists deal economic blow by skipping US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Canadian tourists are foregoing travel to the U.S. amid a period of strain in the bilateral relationship, with plummeting visits threatening the American tourism industry and wider American economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">According to data released Monday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/260413\/dq260413c-eng.htm?indid=27643-5&amp;indgeo=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Canada<\/a>, the number of Canadians making return visits to the U.S. by car fell 4.5 percent in March, when compared to same month last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">It noted that last year\u2019s figures were also impacted by \u201cpolitical tensions between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> and the United States,\u201d and said that comparing March 2026 to March 2024 revealed a 34.9 percent decline in round trips.<\/p>\n<p>Why It Matters<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Before 2025, Canada was the largest source of international visitors to the U.S., according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/press\/potential-results-decline-canadian-travel-united-states\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Travel Association<\/a>, which last year warned that even a 10-percent reduction could translate into \u201c$2.1 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.org\/voxeu\/columns\/when-neighbours-stop-knocking-hidden-impact-canadas-2025-tourism-decline-us-local\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report from the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR<\/a>), the decline in inbound travel eventually came to 25 percent, attributed to rising \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade<\/a> tensions\u201d caused by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> as well as his repeated reference to Canada as a potential \u201c51st state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What To Know<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Statistics Canada said that overall return trips by Canadian residents to the U.S. totaled two million last month, down 7.6 percent from a year prior. In addition to automobile travel, the agency said return trips to the U.S. by air had fallen 13.8 percent year-over-year in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Travel industry representatives and economic analysts have observed the decline and noted that this continues to hold significant consequences for the tourism industry\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.bea.gov\/scb\/issues\/2025\/02-february\/0225-travel-tourism-satellite-account.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated to account<\/a> for around 3% of U.S. industry, I have never seen anything like what the Canadians have pulled off,\u201d Amir Eylon, President and CEO of the tourism research and consulting firm Longwoods International, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/suzannerowankelleher\/2026\/04\/13\/canadian-visits-us-down-35-percent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Overseas trips to other destinations have been on the rise, however, and a report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/economics\/canadian-analysis\/featured-analysis\/insights\/rebalancing-canadian-travel-continues-as-u-s-cross-border-trips-decline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Bank of Canada<\/a> notes that the decline in U.S. travel has helped to support a resurgence in domestic tourism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Seen as part of a wider move toward economic self-sufficiency by Canada, this trend has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/076a1848-5107-4049-886e-175ab8313ffc\/canadian-tourism-report.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been lamented<\/a> by Democrat lawmakers in the U.S., but celebrated by political leaders within Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">During a recent conference, Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/mark-carney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> declared that Canadians were \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mark-carney-takes-swipe-trump-whiskey-joke-defiant-speech-11816956\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rediscovering our country<\/a>,\u201d while outlining his government\u2019s plan to prioritize domestic suppliers, further diversify exports away from the U.S. and to pursue a more independent economic and foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>What Happens Next<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Experts have forecast an uptick in travel to the U.S. in 2026 compared to 2025. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/resource\/us-international-inbound-lessons-from-2025-outlook-for-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford Economics<\/a> predicts a 3.9 percent increase in international inbound travel, supported in part by the U.S. hosting the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/fifa-world-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cHowever, ongoing policy uncertainty and enforcement actions from the Trump administration are likely to limit gains,\u201d its report reads, \u201cleaving the U.S. at risk of underperforming other international destination markets again this
