{"id":45185,"date":"2026-05-14T16:45:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/45185\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:45:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:45:06","slug":"ottawa-begins-consultations-on-strategy-to-double-canadas-grid-capacity-by-2050","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/45185\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa begins consultations on strategy to double Canada\u2019s grid capacity by 2050"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/SR66T3XZLNFOPG5K3YMR46NMGI.jpg?auth=330d3de25fc7c5c3156e753617233e315e8b0e56ce82502fc8baaf87d5b91a61&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A worker walks past rows of power lines in Mississauga, Ont.Nathan Denette\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The federal government announced Thursday it has begun consultations with provincial and territorial governments, utilities, unions and Indigenous Peoples to develop a national strategy to double the size of Canada\u2019s power grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Although dubbed a \u201cnational electricity strategy,\u201d the announcement largely reiterated longstanding federal priorities such as increasing interties between provincial electricity grids, accelerating regulatory approvals for large projects and supporting nuclear power projects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The government also said it wants to strengthen domestic manufacturing of components such as transformers and wind turbine towers, and address labour shortages in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/electricity\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/electricity\/\">electricity sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-will-soaring-electricity-rates-kill-ontarios-nuclear-expansion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In-depth: Will soaring electricity rates kill Ontario\u2019s nuclear expansion?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Speaking in Ottawa, Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> said Canada would achieve the proposed doubling of power generation by 2050 through \u201cmassive investment\u201d and borrowing \u201cusing our AAA balance sheet.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cGet it wrong, and Canadians will pay higher utility bills,\u201d Mr. Carney said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cBe too timid, and Canadians will end up short of power \u2013 losing good jobs and growing reliant on foreign suppliers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">According to the government, electricity accounts for about one-fifth of all energy use in Canada today.
