{"id":4606,"date":"2026-04-14T13:49:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T13:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/4606\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T13:49:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T13:49:15","slug":"canadian-prime-minister-mark-carney-secures-majority-government-after-3-special-election-wins-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/4606\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney secures majority government after 3 special election wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney returns to Parliament on Tuesday with more power after he secured a majority government by sweeping three special elections. <\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s Liberals now have 174 of the 343 seats in the House of Commons and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-canada-special-elections-trump-304cca23cd562e911002aa2c83f19fb2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won\u2019t need support<\/a> from opposition parties to pass legislation after winning three districts that became vacant after last year\u2019s election. <\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s government is the first in Canada\u2019s history to switch from a minority to a majority between national elections. <\/p>\n<p>The Liberal Party could stay in power until 2029 after Monday\u2019s results. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters have placed their trust in our new government\u2019s plan. We accept that support with humility, determination and a clear understanding of what this moment demands,\u201d Carney said in a post on social media. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-liberal-leader-prime-minister-carney-trump-cd44b5930a2846c1d2c5f3ba5bdea3bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carney<\/a> won <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-election-prime-minister-carney-trump-poilievre-9e74b1aa2749b2b5697997803fbcc66e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada\u2019s election<\/a> last year, fueled by public anger over U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s annexation threats, and he has vowed to reduce Canada\u2019s reliance on the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-liberals-conservative-defection-majority-government-b7a3714898eb6543fa4a80278cac89d2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five defections<\/a> from opposition parties, including four from the main opposition Conservative party, put Carney\u2019s Liberals on the cusp of the majority.<\/p>\n<p>One of those defectors referenced Carney\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-canada-davos-trump-eee151f749f35c8b30a9ff4a9525d0be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speech at the World Economic Forum<\/a> in Davos, Switzerland, as helping in his decision. In that speech, Carney condemned economic coercion by great powers against smaller countries and received widespread praise for his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Carney, the former head of the Bank of England as well as Canada\u2019s central bank, has moved the Liberals to the center-right since replacing <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trudeau-canada-politics-future-resignation-calls-03b27b55590bda7fb341065dd51fb873\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Trudeau<\/a> as prime minister in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In Toronto, Danielle Martin won the election for the district of University Rosedale and Doly Begum won the district of Scarborough Southwest. Meanwhile, Tatiana Auguste won the Terrebonne district north of Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, said Trump has been a major factor in Carney\u2019s rise to prime minister, but his performance on the world stage has only added to his popularity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians liked seeing how well he was received at Davos and have been impressed by his travels abroad \u2014 he visited 13 countries by last September \u2014 in search of new alliances, investments and trade pacts. World leaders want to do business with him,\u201d Wiseman said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarney has proven he is a formidable politician. He has studied politics and politicians his whole life and met with many. He met Trump before either was elected.
