What you may not picture is a resistance band, a foam roller, or someone calmly saying, “let’s check how that knee moves.”

And yet, that’s where a lot of readiness is quietly built

Caption

CAF Physiotherapist deployed in Afghanistan

May is Physiotherapy Month in Canada, and it’s a perfect time to spotlight the physiotherapy officers, physiotherapists, physiotherapy technologists, and physiotherapy assistants who help Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members stay strong, mobile, and deployable. They may not make the headlines-but without them, missions stall fast.

More than ice packs and stretching

Across the country, more than 150 physiotherapy professionals support CAF members every day. Their goal is simple but powerful: stop small problems from becoming big ones, get members back to work safely, and keep injuries from defining careers.

Physiotherapy is all about movement that matters, such as lifting kit, jumping from vehicles, and running with purpose. Available to CAF members without a doctor’s referral, CAF physiotherapists are evidence-informed health care professionals that assess, treat, educate, and problem solve early-often shaving weeks or months off recovery timelines.

Right place, right time

Physiotherapy professionals work at more than 22 locations nationwide, embedded within CAF medical facilities as part of Physical Rehabilitation teams. You’ll find them serving as Regular Force or Primary Reserve Physiotherapy Officers, Department of National Defence (DND) public service employees, or contracted providers.

A bigger tool kit than you think

Caption

CAF Physiotherapy Officer providing support as Event Head Athletic Trainer at CAF Swimming Nationals

Yes, they treat sore backs and cranky knees, but that’s just the warm up. CAF physiotherapists emphasize active rehabilitation, complex injury recovery, and modern approaches to persistent pain management. This active, person-partnered care approach goes beyond symptom relief-helping CAF members regain confidence, function, and durability. These physiotherapists create injury prevention programs, lead group classes, and deliver hands on treatments like manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, soft tissue techniques, and other targeted treatments as needed. They also support wound care, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and cardiorespiratory and neurological recovery.

Same mission, every time: restore function, reduce barriers, and keep members ready.

Fast access, real results

Caption

CAF Physiotherapist led warm-up supporting Solider On Conquer the Rideau Canal

Through scheduled appointments, Sick Parade (same day access), and walk-ins, physiotherapy teams provide quick assessment and early intervention. That speed matters to members, units, and the health system alike. Early care keeps people training, reduces time off work, and strengthens teams.

At home and downrange

CAF Physiotherapy Officers don’t stay behind the lines. They deploy domestically and overseas, supporting operations, exercises, Soldier On, the Invictus Games, the Warrior Games, and CAF sports. From field hospitals to rehabilitation clinics, from Bosnia to Afghanistan, to today’s NATO missions, they help keep CAF members moving wherever duty calls.

This Physiotherapy Month, we salute the professionals who make strength sustainable and readiness repeatable.
