{"id":50037,"date":"2026-05-18T14:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T14:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/50037\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T14:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T14:05:23","slug":"canadian-rockies-visitor-management-plan-monumentally-important-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/50037\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Rockies visitor management plan &#8216;monumentally important&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By now, it&#8217;s well-known the Rocky Mountains are busy \u2014 too busy, some would say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Iconic destinations like Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Kananaskis Country draw millions of visitors each year, leading residents to complain about overcrowding and over-tourism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But those with the most power to do something about it \u2014 various levels of government and agencies in the region \u2014 aren&#8217;t necessarily communicating how best to tackle the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now, a plan known as &#8220;destination stewardship&#8221; is aiming to improve managing how humans use the Bow Valley and formalize communication between all those powers that be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cVisitors are coming and they will continue to come,\u201d said Grant Canning, a former Banff councillor who studies tourism management and is leading the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou\u2019re not going to be able to stop it, but you better learn how to manage it and manage it more effectively. It\u2019s really difficult to manage this in silos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Decisions made by one jurisdiction often have unintended consequences for others. Tanya Foubert said it&#8217;s necessary to have a \u201cshared vision\u201d among area partners, with tourism being a \u201csignificant part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/canmore-council-strategic-plan-9.7157100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:council\u2019s strategic plan;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;council\u2019s strategic plan&quot;}\" class=\"link \">council\u2019s strategic plan<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The plan has early support from the Town of Canmore, Tourism Canmore Kananaskis and Alberta Parks. Other partners identified are Parks Canada, the Kananaskis Improvement District, the Town of Banff and Municipal District of Bighorn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Canmore Mayor Sean Krausert said destination stewardship would be \u201cabsolutely monumentally important to this valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Concept successful in United States<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The idea isn\u2019t new. It\u2019s already used in American tourism hot spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nocoplaces.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:NoCo Places;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;NoCo Places&quot;}\" class=\"link \">NoCo Places<\/a> has existed for about a decade in northern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The region is covered in public land such as Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Rocky Mountain National Park, which get a combined 12 million visitors a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe challenge was so many people going to these locations, they were loving Colorado to death,\u201d said Steve Coffin, the first executive director of NoCo Places. \u201cWe wanted to protect the recreation experience, while also protecting environment and wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As is the case with the Canadian Rockies&#8217; proximity to growing Calgary, Denver and its metropolitan area of about three million led to high use of trails in nearby parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coffin said he was \u201cworried about losing what makes Colorado special, with its outdoor experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He started meeting with different leaders at all levels of government and public sector service to \u201cbreak down bureaucratic boundaries\u201d and foster collaboration.
