{"id":50347,"date":"2026-05-18T19:43:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T19:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/50347\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T19:43:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T19:43:12","slug":"alberta-separatist-groups-controversial-voter-id-app-has-links-to-us-ambassador-maga-influencers-and-wealthy-michigan-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/50347\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta Separatist Group\u2019s Controversial Voter ID App Has Links to US Ambassador, MAGA Influencers and Wealthy Michigan\u00a0Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump\u2019s top envoy to Canada says he was unaware a voter identification app that he previously endorsed and promoted was used by an Alberta separatist group at the centre of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-06\/alberta-independence-activists-are-embroiled-in-voter-data-scandal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major Canadian political scandal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra, who is also personally acquainted with both the app\u2019s founder and the founder\u2019s wealthy step-father, denies any knowledge of the app\u2019s use by Alberta separatists to identify the names and addresses of supporters of a potential referendum on the province separating from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not aware of the relationship,\u201d Ambassador Hoekstra told PressProgress about the apparent collaboration between an Alberta separatist group called the Centurion Project and a Michigan-based right-wing political group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10xvotes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">10xVotes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Parker, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/who-is-take-back-alberta-and-what-do-they-really-want\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">far-right separatist organizer<\/a>, cites 10xVotes as his inspiration for launching the Centurion Project and claims the American group has been quietly working with him behind-the-scenes for over a year.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73190\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-07-10xvotes-pete-hoekstra-david-parker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"594\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pete Hoekstra promoting 10xVotes, Centurion Project leader David Parker (Source: Lance Griffin, Facebook; Freedom Calendar, YouTube)<\/p>\n<p>The issue of foreign support of Alberta separatist groups has been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-alberta-separation-being-targeted-by-foreign-actors-seeking-to-stoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">open question <\/a>since the US State Department confirmed earlier this year that Trump administration officials have held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/11dc2140-6a5d-4536-b766-52c920affcc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">multiple meetings<\/a> with Alberta separatist leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The Centurion Project is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readtheorchard.org\/p\/scoop-elections-alberta-investigating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">under investigation<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ab.ca\/resources\/media\/news-releases\/message-to-albertans-re-unauthorized-use-of-list-of-electors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elections Alberta<\/a>, Alberta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oipc.ab.ca\/office-of-the-alberta-information-and-privacy-commissioner-issues-notice-of-investigation-regarding-alleged-breach-of-list-of-electors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Information and Privacy Commissioner<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-elections-alberta-confirms-potential-data-breach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RCMP<\/a> into how the group obtained private data about nearly three million Albertans <a href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/how-did-an-alberta-separatist-group-get-its-hands-on-the-voter-list\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly sourced<\/a> from the province\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ab.ca\/resources\/media\/news-releases\/update-unauthorized-use-of-list-of-electors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official list of electors<\/a>. The massive data breach is being described as potentially one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/court-documents-voter-list-9.7201375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cmost significant privacy incidents\u201d<\/a> in Canadian history.<\/p>\n<p>That information, which includes the names and residential addresses of millions of Alberta voters, was accessible to separatist activists through the app\u2019s database. One video leaked from a Centurion Project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertandpcaucus.ca\/news\/post\/evidence-suggests-ucp-joined-april-16-centurion-project-meeting-former-premier-s-data-shared\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">training call<\/a> shows the group <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11831942\/dangerous-violation-jason-kenney-alleged-centurion-project-leak\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shared the home address<\/a> of former premier <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jkenney\/status\/2051789277818921367\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jason Kenney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elections Alberta alleges the Centurion Project obtained the list of electors from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ab.ca\/resources\/media\/news-releases\/update-unauthorized-use-of-list-of-electors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Republican Party of Alberta<\/a>, a registered provincial political party that advocates for Alberta independence.<\/p>\n<p>Unauthorized use of the list of electors can result in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ab.ca\/resources\/media\/news-releases\/update-unauthorized-use-of-list-of-electors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$100,000 fine and one year in jail<\/a>. Elections Alberta has indicated the separatist group is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/political-organizer-from-separatist-group-not-co-operating-with-voter-list-investigation-elections-alberta-9.7196927\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnot cooperating\u201d<\/a> with their investigation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73097\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-02-centurion-project-jason-kenney.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"524\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Centurion Project app training session (Zoom)<\/p>\n<p>Neither Parker nor his lawyer, Chad Williamson, answered questions from PressProgress about the nature of the Centurion Project\u2019s collaboration with 10xVotes. Parker, however, discussed the subject at length on a recent podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my travels in the United States, I\u2019ve met a lot of political organizers and I\u2019ve talked to a lot of people, and I stumbled across this group out of Michigan called 10xVotes,\u201d Parker told a podcast last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was massively impressed with what they\u2019d done, and I wanted to bring that idea and that methodology to Alberta,\u201d Parker explained. \u201cFor almost two years \u2014 it\u2019ll be two years this fall \u2014 I\u2019ve been working with them, talking with them, trying to build this out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the result is the Centurion Project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The app, which Parker described as the \u201c10x slash the Centurion Project app,\u201d targets low-engagement voters who may lean one way or another politically, but don\u2019t reliably show up to vote. The app attempts to solve this problem by asking supporters to use their database to identify 10 politically-aligned friends, family or neighbours who can be pressured into showing up to vote.<\/p>\n<p>First rolled out during the 2024 US presidential election, its backers tout 10xVotes as the secret weapon that helped deliver Michigan\u2019s 15 electoral college votes to Donald Trump. Michigan Republicans are currently holding state-wide information sessions about 10xVotes in hopes that the technology will help send right-wing candidates to congress after this fall\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>A version of 10xVotes\u2019 Michigan app reviewed by PressProgress has a substantially similar interface and functionalities as the Centurion Project\u2019s app in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73160\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-05-10xvotes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michigan Republican 10xVotes information session (Source: Lance Griffin, Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>Prior to being appointed ambassador to Canada, Hoekstra served as the chair of the Michigan Republican Party and was one of 10xVotes\u2019 most vocal public backers.<\/p>\n<p>During multiple 2024 rallies alongside Trump and his running mate JD Vance, Hoekstra explicitly called on crowds of Trump supporters to download the 10xVotes app in order to identify friends and family members to assist Trump\u2019s \u2018get out the vote\u2019 efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember this \u2014 10xVotes,\u201d Hoekstra told a <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2024\/11\/02\/trump-returns-to-macomb-county-reflecting-on-the-campaign-while-lashing-out-at-harris-and-cheney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 2, 2024 rally<\/a> in Warren, Michigan. \u201cIt is an app that you can download, and in real-time, up-to-date data, it will tell you whether your friends and family have voted or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s called 10xVotes,\u201d Hoekstra repeated. \u201cWe need you to go out and get a few more folks to the polls so that we swamp the vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to publicly endorsing and repeatedly promoting the app, 10xVotes also credited Hoekstra with leveraging his political connections to help the group organize in-person presentations to further promote their app.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement to PressProgress, the US ambassador acknowledged having promoted the 10xVotes app in his earlier role but flatly denied any personal involvement or financial stake in the voter identification tool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have zero involvement with 10xVotes,\u201d Ambassador Hoekstra told PressProgress. \u201cI have never had any financial relationship with 10xVotes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were a potential tool, offered for free to get out Republicans voters for President Trump in 2024. I was chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and it was my job to develop a winning campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/extapps2.oge.gov\/201\/Presiden.nsf\/PAS+Index\/CA4CB8E65FE0EE4585258C40003207C3\/$FILE\/Hoekstra%2C%20Peter%20%20finalEA.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conflict-of-interest disclosure filings<\/a> show Hoekstra resigned as Michigan GOP chair in February 2025 and did not report any business interests relating to the app.<\/p>\n<p>10xVotes, which offers its services and access to its voter database for free in support of GOP candidates, has also been boosted by an unusual number of other influential but controversial MAGA figures.<\/p>\n<p>The app has been publicly endorsed by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones of the website Infowars. The app was also showcased on an episode of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon\u2019s podcast.<\/p>\n<p>10xVotes, the assumed name of a company called Voteatron LLC, is the brainchild of two west Michigan political operatives involved in social conservative activism who boast high-profile family connections.<\/p>\n<p>Drew Born, a Grand Rapids commercial real estate broker and the director of Voteatron, is a well-connected Republican activist who runs a group called Michigan Family Action and previously ran for <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2023\/02\/19\/karamo-beats-deperno-in-michigan-gop-chair-race-moving-the-party-further-right\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chair of the Michigan GOP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, Born has promoted the Heritage Foundation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/05\/g-s1-32720\/what-is-project-2025-trump-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cProject 2025\u201d<\/a> plan, posted photos of himself at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/10\/us\/turning-point-usa-charlie-kirk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Turning Point USA<\/a> galas at Mar-a-Lago and advocated the annexation of the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n<p>Born is also directly connected to Ambassador Hoekstra: Born and Hoekstra are both listed as directors of the Mecosta Environmental and Security Alliance, a group opposing the construction of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/michigan\/2023\/07\/06\/critic-of-chinese-battery-plant-pete-hoekstra-once-lobbied-for-chinese-lumber-wood-flooring-company\/70385431007\/?gca-cat=p&amp;gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">EV battery manufacturing plant<\/a> in west Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-01-10xvotes-pete-hoekstra.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"396\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Notably, Born is also the step-son of Michigan businessman JC Huizenga, the owner of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charterschools.org\/blog\/national-heritage-academies-founder-j.c.-huizenga-inducted-into-charter-schools-hall-of-fame\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chain of religious charter schools<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.jrn.msu.edu\/2018\/10\/private-police-bill-looms-over-lame-duck-session\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">influential figure<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignresourcegroup.com\/huizenga_jchuizenga_2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local GOP politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, Tammy Born Huizenga, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2025\/04\/20\/why-young-people-are-drawn-rfk-jrs-make-america-healthy-again-agenda\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supporter<\/a> of Trump Health Secretary RFK Jr.\u2019s \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d agenda who was recently appointed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/Wxy8C\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">senior advisor<\/a> to the US Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>The family\u2019s generational wealth is originally derived from garbage collection and is part of an extended family tree that includes the late billionaire H. Wayne Huizenga, founder of Waste Management Inc. and former owner of Blockbuster Video, as well as the NFL\u2019s Miami Dolphins, MLB\u2019s Florida Marlins and the NHL\u2019s Florida Panthers.<\/p>\n<p>Huizenga and Hoekstra have a personal history, as well: Huizenga is an old donor to Hoekstra\u2019s past congressional campaigns, and the two served as campaign chairs for Mitt Romney\u2019s 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/romney-campaign-press-release-governor-mitt-romney-names-west-michigan-leadership-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Michigan leadership team<\/a>. They also served as board members for the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenaf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2011-Annual-Review.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netherland-America Foundation<\/a> (Hoekstra was later appointed US ambassador to the Netherlands, where he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/23\/world\/europe\/ambassador-hoekstra-netherlands.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accused of foreign interference<\/a> after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/pete-hoekstra-us-ambassador-under-fire-for-hosting-dutch-far-right-bash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hosting an event<\/a> for a Dutch far-right political party).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73157\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73157\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-03-10xvotes-drew-born-maralago.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"624\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">10xVotes founder Drew Born at Turning Point USA fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, posing with Project Veritas\u2019 James O\u2019Keefe (Source: Drew Born, Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>Drew Wierda, the other founder of the 10xVotes app, introduces himself as the nephew of Blackwater CEO Erik Prince, who is himself another former donor to Hoekstra\u2019s past congressional campaigns and the brother of Trump\u2019s first-term education secretary, Betsy DeVos.<\/p>\n<p>Born and Wierda are both alumni of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, a private Christian liberal arts school <a href=\"https:\/\/hope.edu\/about\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affiliated<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rca.org\/about\/history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch Reformed Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Born and 10xVotes did not respond to numerous phone calls, emails and direct messages sent over the span of a week, requesting clarification on the group\u2019s involvement with the Centurion Project, its connections with Ambassador Hoekstra or its sources of funding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73158\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73158\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-04-10xvotes-drew-born-kash-patel-drew-wierda.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"728\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">10xVotes\u2019 Drew Born and Drew Wierda pose with Trump FBI director Kash Patel (Photo: Drew Born, Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>10xVotes\u2019 business model is somewhat murky. The app describes itself as a service provided for free in support of Michigan Republicans and does not charge its users subscription fees, yet it does not publicly solicit donations through its website or indicate who funds it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe raise our own money,\u201d Lance Griffin, 10xVotes\u2019 head of public affairs, explained in a presentation to one state GOP group last year. \u201cWe don\u2019t ask for any donations, we\u2019ve made this free and available to all of you, all the local county parties and the Michigan Republican party [to] access our website and our data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However it funds itself, the group appears to have significant funds at its disposal.<\/p>\n<p>10xVotes was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2025\/02\/25\/10xvotes-friends-relatives-get-out-conservative-vote\/80002530007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">corporate sponsor<\/a> at the 2025 Michigan GOP convention (Hoekstra\u2019s final event as party chair) and Parker claims the group spent another $50,000 sponsoring a VIP suite at a 2024 Tucker Carlson Live event in Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n<p>According to Parker\u2019s story, he was also personally responsible for persuading Tucker Carlson to endorse the 10xVotes app that night \u2014 and, in turn, perhaps also responsible for Trump\u2019s election victory in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used all of my political capital with Tucker to get them to endorse it on stage that night,\u201d Parker told a podcast. \u201cWe tracked the results of that endorsement, that endorsement resulted in 86,000 people who were historically non-voters voting in that election \u2026 that\u2019s almost the victory margin for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s unclear to what extent Trump\u2019s victory can be attributable to Parker\u2019s personal intervention (Carlson\u2019s production company did not respond to a request for comment from PressProgress), Carlson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mpe7ZSmxNqs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did indeed endorse the app<\/a> that evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did hear of something really cool today,\u201d Carlson told his supporters at Grand Rapids\u2019 Van Andel Arena. \u201cI\u2019ve never done anything like this before, but I\u2019m going to do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s actually a website in the state of Michigan where you can find people who would probably vote for the candidate you\u2019re voting for but don\u2019t vote,\u201d Carlson said. \u201cIt\u2019s called 10xVotes, and you can go on there and just contact people you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photos from the event that night show Pete Hoekstra was present in 10xVotes\u2019 Tucker Carlson and Kid Rock VIP suite, where he sat next to 10xVotes\u2019 head of public affairs and again promoted the app.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73159\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73159\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2026-05-06-10xvotes-pete-hoekstrajpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"995\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Lance Griffin (Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to PressProgress, Elections Alberta said it is unable to confirm or deny if it is investigating any possible unauthorized use of electors\u2019 data by 10xVotes, explaining the agency is \u201clegislatively prohibited from commenting on complaints, allegations or investigations we may or may not be reviewing or conducting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elections Alberta noted it secured an interim injunction to stop the unauthorized use of the list of electors and had made efforts to identify and contact anyone who had \u201caccess to or viewed the information in the list of electors.\u201d It also said it is legislatively empowered to investigate acts of foreign interference.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the Centurion Project nor 10xVotes answered questions seeking to clarify if any data about Alberta voters was stored on foreign servers or otherwise handled by the American company.<\/p>\n<p>10xVotes likewise did not say if the US-based group had been contacted by Elections Alberta, Alberta\u2019s Information and Privacy Commissioner or the RCMP.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Hoekstra told PressProgress it is the position of the United States government that US companies must act in accordance with domestic laws, but said the US government takes no position on US companies or political actors independently assisting secessionist groups in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US government position is clear.
