The United States on Monday suspended cooperation with Canada in a 86-year-old joint defence advisory body, in the latest disruption of ties between the two neighbours.<\/p>\n
U.S. Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby said in a post on X that the Pentagon was \u201cpausing\u201d participation in the Permanent Joint Board on Defense, which was created in 1940.<\/p>\n
The move follows President Donald Trump hitting Canada with tariffs and repeatedly calling for the country to become America\u2019s 51st state.<\/p>\n
Trump has often pushed America\u2019s traditional allies to boost military spending and rely less on U.S. protection.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, Canada has failed to make credible progress on its defense commitments,\u201d Colby wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can no longer avoid the gaps between rhetoric and reality,\u201d Colby wrote in a dig at Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n
Colby\u2019s post linked to Carney\u2019s widely-touted January speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in which the prime minister declared that the global order was experiencing a \u201crupture\u201d and that \u201cwe largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.\u201d<\/p>\n
The board, made up of American and Canadian military and civilian representatives, studies joint defence issues and offers policy recommendations to the two governments.<\/p>\n
Under a plan announced by Carney in February, Canada will invest C$500 billion in its defence industry over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n
Carney acknowledged at that time that Canada had not done enough to defend itself in an increasingly dangerous world and that counting on U.S. protection was no longer viable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve relied too heavily on our geography and others to protect us,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n
In April, Jennie Carignan, Canada\u2019s top military officer, told AFP she was pleased that military spending had reached two per cent of GDP, in line with a NATO target.<\/p>\n
The joint board was established in 1940 under U.S. president Franklin\u00a0Roosevelt and Canadian prime minister William King.<\/p>\n
