A 22-year-old man is facing more than a dozen extortion-related charges over a string of violent incidents in Surrey and Abbotsford, B.C., from last year.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) and Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) announced charges of arson and extortion, along with multiple weapons charges, against Gursewak Singh.<\/p>\n
Police initially arrested Singh after a shooting at a business near King and Townline roads in Abbotsford on Dec. 17, 2025. He was subsequently charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm, according to AbbyPD.<\/p>\n
Officers from AbbyPD’s extortion task force and the SPS’s organized crime unit then worked together on the investigation, which found Singh was also involved in a pair of violent incidents in Surrey in the preceding days.<\/p>\n
“Our organized crime unit reached out based on information that was disseminated by Abbotsford,” SPS spokesperson Sgt. Ali Gailus said.<\/p>\n
“Through those discussions and various forensic avenues they were able to determine this individual was responsible for all three incidents.”<\/p>\n
Both Surrey incidents involved businesses that had previously been targeted with extortion threats.<\/p>\n
In the early morning of Dec. 14, 2025, someone opened fire on a business near 120th Street and 80th Avenue, according to SPS. No one was hurt.<\/p>\n
The following morning, police were called to a business parking lot on Old Yale Road near 124th Street, where a pair of vehicles had been set on fire.<\/p>\n
Police say Singh remains in custody and is due back in court on Friday. Anyone with further information is asked to contact police in Surrey or Abbotsford.<\/p>\n
Gailus said Singh does not have a criminal record and was not known to police.<\/p>\n
Police referred questions on Singh’s status in Canada to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).<\/p>\n
The CBSA said it could not comment on the case due to the Privacy Act.<\/p>\n
The announcement comes a week after Surrey police announced charges against two men in a shooting<\/a> at a home where the resident had been targeted with extortion threats.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Surrey police released data showing there had been 98 reported extortion incidents in the city this year, as of May 11. Sixteen of those involved gunfire.<\/p>\n
