{"id":55705,"date":"2026-05-22T04:48:45","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T04:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/55705\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T04:48:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T04:48:45","slug":"alberta-to-hold-october-referendum-on-whether-to-remain-in-canada-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/55705\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta to hold October referendum on whether to remain in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s oil-rich province of Alberta will hold a <a data-ylk=\"slk:referendum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/referendum\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">referendum<\/a> in October on leaving <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canada;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/canada\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, but the province\u2019s premier said Thursday it won\u2019t actually be a vote on whether to separate.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Smith said voters instead would be deciding whether it\u2019s time to hold a referendum on quitting Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be clear. I support Alberta remaining in Canada, and this is how I would vote on separation in a provincial referendum. It is also the position of my <a data-ylk=\"slk:government;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/government\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a>,\u201d Smith said in televised remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The question will ask whether Alberta should stay in Canada or take legal steps under the Constitution to hold a binding referendum on leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Brodie, a former chief of staff to ex-Conservative Prime Minister <a data-ylk=\"slk:Stephen Harper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/stephen-harper\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Harper<\/a> and a now a political <a data-ylk=\"slk:science;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/science\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">science<\/a> professor at the University of Calgary, said Smith appears to be proceeding very carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vote to see if people even want a vote. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place. A 1998 <a data-ylk=\"slk:Supreme Court;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/supreme-court\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Supreme Court<\/a> ruling means provinces cannot secede unilaterally from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel B\u00e9land, a political <a data-ylk=\"slk:science;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/science\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">science<\/a> professor at McGill University in Montreal, noted Smith has publicly opposed independence so some people have compared her stance to the one of Britain&#8217;s then-Prime Minister <a data-ylk=\"slk:David Cameron;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/david-cameron\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">David Cameron<\/a> ahead of the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Brexit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/brexit\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Brexit<\/a> referendum, which he embraced as a way to manage a vocal faction of his ruling party while not wanting the U.K. to leave the <a data-ylk=\"slk:European Union;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/european-union\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitically Smith seems committed to do so to appease supporters of her own party who want a referendum.
