{"id":55910,"date":"2026-05-22T10:23:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/55910\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T10:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:23:53","slug":"air-france-flight-to-u-s-is-diverted-to-montreal-over-congolese-passenger-amid-ebola-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/55910\/","title":{"rendered":"Air France Flight to U.S. Is Diverted to Montreal Over Congolese Passenger Amid Ebola Fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">An Air France flight bound for Detroit was diverted to Montreal on Wednesday after it was denied permission to land in the United States because a passenger was from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an Ebola outbreak is underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Flight 378, which took off from Paris, was diverted after the Congolese national \u201cwas denied entry into the United States,\u201d the airline said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was no medical emergency on board,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Trump administration on Monday <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/cdc-ebola-congo-uganda-south-sudan.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed U.S. borders<\/a> to anyone who had recently been in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, citing the Ebola outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The State Department <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TravelGov\/status\/2056722794788901354\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">has<\/a> \u201cstrongly\u201d urged Americans not to travel to those three countries. It also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/en\/international-travel\/travel-advisories\/global-events\/worldwide-caution.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on Thursday that all U.S.-bound passengers \u2014 including American citizens and permanent residents \u2014 who were in those countries within 21 days of their arrival in the United States must only enter through Washington Dulles International Airport for enhanced screening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that it had prohibited the Air France flight from landing in Detroit. \u201cAir France boarded a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo in error on a flight to the United States,\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cDue to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The agency did not immediately respond to a question about the passenger\u2019s travel history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The World Health Organization <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/17\/world\/africa\/ebola-congo-uganda-who-public-health-emergency.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> the Ebola outbreak a \u201cpublic health emergency of international concern\u201d on Sunday. It is suspected to have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/17\/world\/africa\/what-to-know-ebola-africa.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caused more than 130 deaths and nearly 600 infections<\/a>, but there is little risk of it developing into a global pandemic, the W.H.O.\u2019s director general said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The entry restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on Monday do not apply to American citizens or U.S. service members.
